Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Until 2010, this Hall of Fame pitcher held a pitching record by giving up 505 career home runs. He was a 20-game winner in six consecutive seasons, then two seasons later went 10-22. Which Phillies pitcher was this?

Answer: Robin Roberts

Robin played 14 of his 19 seasons with the Phillies. He gave up 505 career home runs, and this record was broken by Jamie Moyer in 2010. Robin's career win/loss record was 286-245. He was runner-up for the MVP in 1952 to Hank Sauer of the Cubs. Roberts was a 20-game winner from 1951-1955, then went 10-22 in 1957. Robin died in May 2010 just before Moyer broke his home run record. Ironically, Moyer was with the Phillies also.
2. This Detroit Tiger pitcher was not only a 20-game winner three times, but a 30-game winner once also. Two seasons after winning 24, he lost 22 with another team. Who is this pitcher?

Answer: Denny McLain

McLain was on top of the world in 1968 going 31-6. He was the first 30-game winner since Dizzy Dean in 1934. In 1969, Denny went 24-9, and won the AL Cy Young Award in both those seasons. Unfortunately, gambling and racketeering allegations hit him in 1970, and he went 3-5 in the season.

After being traded to the Senators, Denny went 10-22 in 1971. He was later banned from baseball in conjunction with his prison terms.
3. This pitcher won the Cy Young Award in 1972 as a Phillie when he went 27-10. Unfortunately, the following season he went 13-20. Who was this six-time 20-game winner?

Answer: Steve Carlton

Carlton began his career in 1965 with the Cardinals. He played for seven seasons before fans would experience the most lopsided trade in history. Carlton went to the Phillies in a one-for-one trade for pitcher Rick Wise. Steve was then a 15-season Phillie, and did most of his career damage with them.

He retired with a 329-244 record, and was the second pitcher in history to reach 4000 career strikeouts. Wise was traded to three other teams before retiring in 1982 with a career record of 188-181.
4. This pitcher was a 20-game winner four times in his career. What caught the eyes of fans was 1968 when he went 21-9 with the Indians, then went 9-20 in 1969. Who is this pitcher that retired in 1982 and was born in Cuba?

Answer: Luis Tiant

1969 was not a good year for 'El Tiante'. In addition to his 9-20 record, he gave up a league leading 37 home runs in the season. He still went 229-172 over 19 seasons.
5. Wearing the number 29, this Detroit Tiger pitcher went 25-14 in 1971, 22-14 in 1972, then two seasons later fell apart with his 16-21 record. Who was this 1971 Cy Young Award runner-up?

Answer: Mickey Lolich

Mickey was overshadowed pretty much by Denny McLain, until McLain's career fell apart. In 1971, Lolich was runner-up for the Cy Young Award to Vida Blue of the Athletics, and finished third in 1972 behind Gaylord Perry and Wilbur Wood.
6. This Hall of Fame inductee and Cy Young Award runner-up won 20 games in a season three time, but reached the 20-game loss mark twice in his career. Who was this Braves pitcher and also 300-game winner?

Answer: Phil Niekro

Phil's 20-game loss seasons were in 1977 and 1979. Strangely enough, he went 21-20 in 1979, and led the league in innings pitched to obtain that season record. He was the Cy Young Award runner-up in 1969 to Tom Seaver of the Mets, and finished third in 1974 behind Mike Marshall and Andy Messersmith, both of the Dodgers.
7. I was a New York Met, and in 1976 I went 21-10, good enough to be the Cy Young Award runner-up. With the ups came the downs, and the down was in 1977 by going 8-20. Who am I?

Answer: Jerry Koosman

Koosman lost the Cy Young Award to Randy Jones of the Padres in 1976. Jerry would bounce back in 1979 to be a 20-game winner again, but this time as a Minnesota Twin. He retired in 1985 after 19 seasons with a 222-209 career record.

Wilbur finished third in 1971 for the Cy Young behind Vida Blue and Mickey Lolich, and was the runner-up in 1972 to Gaylord Perry of the Indians. Wood retired in 1978 after 17 seasons.
