Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Though Braggo Roth led the league in HRs in 1915 with 7, he hit only 4 as an Indian (following a trade with the White Sox). What man was the first Indian to lead the league in HR, solely as an Indian?

Answer: Al Rosen

Rosen hit 37 HR in 1950, and became the first Indian to lead the league in that category. He would take home another HR title in 1953, when he hit 43 HR and 145 RBIs, and came within one one-thousandth of a point from winning the Triple Crown. Rosen batted .336, second to Washington's Mickey Vernon's .337 batting average.
2. What former Indian was the key component, in acquiring Kenny Lofton from the Astros in 1992?

Answer: Eddie Taubensee

Taubensee eventually rejoined the Indians after being bounced around the league. Taubensee was a good left-handed hitter, and a fair defensive receiver. Injuries and frequent team changes probably hurt his career. Lofton on the other hand, stepped into the Indian line up and immediately produced. Lofton became a .300 hitter, a gold glove-caliber center fielder, and the premiere base stealing threat in the American League.
3. Larry Doby originally an infielder, was taught to play center field by what former Indian?

Answer: Tris Speaker

Speaker was recognized as the greatest defensive center fielder of his day. He was famous for playing dangerously shallow in center, close to second base.
4. Partially due to the unique dimensions of League Park, 9 different Indians led the league in which category 17 times between 1901 and 1946?

Answer: Doubles

League Park had a very short right field (290 ft.), and in order to prevent adjacent businesses and cars on Lexington Avenue from being damaged from too many soaring fly balls, a high fence was installed on top of the right field wall. This created a sort of reverse Fenway Park effect.
5. Which Indian pitched 3 complete game World Series wins?

Answer: Stan Coveleski

During the 1920 World Series, which during the brief three-year period from 1919-1921 became a best of 9 series, Coveleski displayed the excellence that would someday lead to his enshrinement in the baseball Hall of Fame. Coveleski started and finished games 1, 4, and 7, allowing only 2 runs to the NL Pennant winners.
