Anola is a small town approximately 20 km (12.5 miles) east of Winnipeg. It had a total population of only 1400, including the surrounding rural area.

Springfield Collegiate Institute is located in Oakbank, and is the only High School in the Springfield Municipality. Corey graduated in 1991.

Corey's exposure to baseball while growing up was minimal, as can be seen in this excerpt from an interview with Breakaway Magazine: "We didn't have baseball in my high school", Corey told Breakaway, "but I played in a club program during the summer. We played one or two games a week in June, July, and the first part of August. We didn't have any practices. If the game was at 6 o'clock, the guys would show up at 5:45, throw the ball around a little bit, and then we'd play the game.

It was pretty informal."
