1. Which famous Portuguese soccer team is nicknamed "The Eagles"?

Answer: Benfica

Sport Lisboa e Benfica were founded in 1904 and have been one of the most dominant clubs in Portugal throughout their history. With the famous striker Eusebio in their ranks, they won the European Champions Cup in both 1961 and 1962, becoming the first Portuguese team to lift the trophy. The club's badge features an eagle perched on top of a bicycle wheel.
2. West Coast Eagles are an Aussie Rules team from which city?

Answer: Perth

West Coast Eagles became the first AFL team from Western Australia when they joined the competition in 1987. They won their first Grand Final in 1992 with a victory over Geelong Cats.
3. The "Super Eagles" is a nickname given to the national soccer team of which African nation?

Answer: Nigeria

The eagle features on the badge of the Nigerian Football Association. The Super Eagles had to wait until 1994 before they qualified for their first World Cup. They made a big impact in that tournament in the USA, winning two of their three group matches, and coming within two minutes of eliminating Italy in the round of 16.

In France, in 1998, they proved that performance was no fluke, defeating Spain on the way to another last sixteen spot.
4. The Philadelphia Eagles have been members of the NFL since 1933. The winners of three league titles in the pre-Super Bowl era, they reached their first Super Bowl in January 1981, where they lost to the Oakland Raiders. Which head coach led them to the big game?

Answer: Dick Vermeil

Following the AFC-NFC merger of 1966, the Eagles struggled in the highly-competitive NFC Eastern Division for many years, but the appointment of Vermeil as head coach in 1976 saw a gradual upturn in their fortunes. The 1980 season saw them win their first divisional title since 1960, and progress to Superbowl XV with postseason victories over Minnesota and Dallas.

The Raiders proved too strong on the big day, winning 27-10.
5. The city of Boston and its suburbs is home to a number of well known universities. Which one has sports teams nicknamed "Eagles"?

Answer: Boston College

Boston College is located in the suburb of Chestnut Hill. The Eagles are members of the Atlantic Coast Conference for most sports - the men's and women's ice hockey squads play in Hockey East. The men's hockey squad has been the most successful of all their sports teams (winning their first national championship in 1949 and their fifth in 2012).
6. Eintracht Frankfurt, nicknamed "Die Adler (The Eagles)", are a famous German soccer club, who were involved in one of the most famous games in European football history. In 1960, at Hampden Park, Glasgow, they lost 7-3 in the final of the European Cup to which Spanish club?

Answer: Real Madrid

Eintracht Frankfurt were founded in 1899 and finally won their first German championship in 1959. Their reward was a place in the following season's European Champions Cup. A 12-4 aggregate win over Scottish champions Rangers in the semi-final saw them head back to Glasgow for the final against the four-time defending champions, Real Madrid.

In a match that is still talked about in the 21st century, the Spanish giants proved too strong, with Ferenc Puskas scoring four times and Alfredo di Stefano grabbing a hat-trick.
7. The Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles compete in which sport?

Answer: Rugby League

The Sea Eagles, from Sydney, Australia, first took part in the New South Wales Rugby Football League in 1947. They were part of that league's successors, the ARL and NRL, until 1999, when they briefly merged with the North Sydney Bears to form the Northern Eagles.

The joint venture failed, and the Sea Eagles reappeared under their own name in 2002. In 2011, they won the eighth Premiership in club history.
8. Which soccer team from London, England, were formerly nicknamed "The Glaziers" before adopting the "Eagles" moniker in 1973?

Their first FA Cup final appearance came in 1990, when they lost to Manchester United after a replay.
9. The Marquette Golden Eagles were the US collegiate national champions in men's basketball in 1977. Which city do they come from?

Answer: Milwaukee

Marquette University was founded in Milwaukee in 1881. The Golden Eagles are members of the Big East Conference, although they don't field a gridiron team. In 1977, the men's basketball team, coached by Al McGuire, won the national championship, defeating North Carolina 67-59 in the final in Atlanta.
10. In which sport is the U.S. national team nicknamed the "Eagles"?

Answer: Rugby Union

The USA isn't reagrded as a hotbed of Rugby Union, but the country's teams have had their moments in the world spotlight. In both 1920 and 1924, they were crowned Olympic champions - unfortunately the sport was dropped from the rota after that. The Eagles took part in seven out of the first eight World Cup tournaments but failed to progress beyond the group stages in any of them.
