Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Politicians aren't exactly popular figures as far as most of the general public are concerned. Imagine the horror when a Sheffield Wednesday supporter paid a visit to "parliament" and saw a government minister wearing Sheffield Wednesday's soccer kit! By which of the following are Sheffield Wednesday often referred?

Answer: The Owls

Sheffield Wednesday are one of the two major football teams based in the English city of Sheffield. The other team is Sheffield United and they have the nickname "The Blades", a name that is rather to the point isn't it?

The nickname of "The Owls" is said to originate from the location of their stadium. Sheffield Wednesday formerly played their home games in the district of Owlerton but due to a change in political and geographic boundaries the stadium is now in the Hillsborough district.
2. A sports fan from Wales was lucky enough to win an Internet competition and the prize was a ticket to see the West Coast Eagles compete in the AFL! The Eagles are based in Perth, so the lucky winner caught a plane to Scotland and asked a local where he could find the Subiaco Oval. The local chuckled as she told him he was in the wrong country! The local asked the sports fan, do you even know what sport you are going to watch? It was no surprise that he didn't, but do you know what sport is played by the West Coast Eagles?

Answer: Australian Rules football

Australian rules football seems, to the outsider, to have absolutely no rules at all but I am reliably informed however that that is not the case. It is probably because the rules don't interrupt the flow of the game very often that Australian rules football has developed in to one of the most exciting sports in the world. The aim is to score a goal through the two central posts and for this a team scores six points. If the team miss slightly such that the ball travels through the two outer posts but not between the two central posts then a behind has been scored and one point is awarded to the team.

The West Coast Eagles, based in Perth, are one of the sixteen teams that play in the top flight of the sport, the Australian Football League (AFL). The Eagles have taken the title on many occasions, the first three victories being in the years 1992, 1994 and 2006.
3. Jamal Anderson, an NFL running back, seemed to forget that he was playing football and instead gave the audience a spectacle that wouldn't be out of place in an episode of 'Dancing with the Stars'! What team was Anderson playing for when he popularised the "Dirty Bird"?

Answer: Atlanta Falcons

Jamal Anderson could often be seen flapping his arms as though he was a bird whenever he reached the end zone for a touchdown. The "Dirty Bird" celebration wasn't just performed by Anderson however, as the craze spread throughout the Atlanta Falcons team. It really is something you have to see for yourself.
4. Whilst a baseball fan was visiting Canada to watch his favourite team play, he was caught "jay" walking in an attempt to get to the ballpark more quickly! He was caught by an officer but the fan insisted he hadn't done anything wrong. The officer told the fan that he could argue until he was "blue" in the face but recommended that he follows the rules if he wanted to make it to the Rogers Centre in time. In which city is the Rogers Centre?

Answer: Toronto

The Rogers Centre became the home of the Toronto Blue Jays in 1989 but it was known as the SkyDome until 2005. Prior to 1989, the Blue Jays franchise played their home games at the Exhibition Stadium with their first game at that ballpark contested in 1977. The Exhibition Stadium was not without its faults and a major problem was the distance between many of the seats and the home plate.
5. A resident of the "City of Churches" bought a ticket to watch her local team play in the AFL. Unfortunately her day went from bad to worse as her team's opponents, Collingwood, scored goal after goal whilst the home team could only seem to string together a few behinds. When she and her friends left the stadium a few Collingwood supporters started trash talking. The home supporter just wished they would stop "crow"ing. In which of the following cities is the home team based?

Answer: Adelaide

The "City of Churches" is a nickname associated with the South Australian city of Adelaide. Adelaide is home to two of the sixteen AFL teams and they first competed in the league in 1991 (Adelaide Football Club) and 1996 (Port Adelaide Football Club). The former has won the title on two successive occasions (1997 and 1998) whilst the latter won their first title in 2004.
6. There is nothing quite like the sound of derision resonating from the crowds at sporting events, and a particular American football team has a variety of rather unflattering nicknames associated with its franchise. Which city is home to the NFL franchise which is sometimes referred to derogatorily as the "Sea slugs"?

Answer: Seattle

The Seattle Seahawks franchise seem to be associated with mediocrity and it is because of this that the team is disparaged with nicknames such as "Seattle Sea slugs". Seattle are by no means the only team to have such a nickname, other humorous examples of these light-hearted taunts include the "Dallas Cowgirls" and the "Denver Donkeys".
7. Two men were in a bar watching soccer on the big screen, one was a Newcastle United supporter whilst the other was a fan of Notts County. What started off as a bit of friendly banter soon turned into a brawl with each man accusing the other man's team of "stealing" their nickname! When everybody had calmed down, the Geordie couldn't help but add, "so long as you don't steal our "shiny" silverware then all is forgiven"! What nickname, used by both Newcastle United and Notts County, was being fought over by the two men?

Answer: The Magpies

"The Magpies" is the nickname of both Newcastle United and Notts County but it is more associated with the former due to Newcastle consistently, and historically, reaching the top flights of English soccer. In 2009, Newcastle United were relegated from the Premiership and this signaled the end of sixteen long years in one of the toughest leagues in the world.
8. Whilst on the way to Camden Yards a supporter of the home team overheard an argument about the name of an MLB team. One person was adamant that the name included the word "Oriels" whilst the other insisted it was actually "Orioles". The home supporter wanted to put an end to the debate and informed them that the team goes by the name of the "Orioles" and not "Oriels". The supporter mentioned that it would be unusual for a team to name themselves for a type of bay window! What MLB team go by the name of "Orioles"?

Answer: Baltimore

The Baltimore Orioles are based in the American state of Maryland on the Atlantic coast. The logo for the baseball team consists of the word "Orioles" written in orange with a black and orange bird of the same name perched on the tittle. The Orioles first won the World Series in 1966 beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in a four-game sweep.
9. Some people just can't seem to get with the times. An elderly Japanese man was deep in conversation with his grandson and at one point the former "legal" professional told the young boy to go and watch Korakuen play at their next fixture. The man was understandably shocked when the youngster told him that that would be impossible as Korakuen are defunct! What is the nickname of this team that was dissolved in 1944? (The name is still used by a sporting franchise in Philadelphia).

Answer: Eagles

The Korakuen Eagles were a short-lived team that competed in the Japanese Baseball League from 1937 to 1940 but existed under other names until dissolution in 1944 as Yamato. The Japanese Baseball League preceded the NPB (Nippon Profession Baseball), the latter now split into two leagues called the Central League and the Pacific League.
10. Did you hear about the time a Phoenix resident went to the Vatican and asked a religious figure what time the game kicked-off? Well, when he realised his mistake he was "red" with embarrassment! What team, beaten by the Steelers in the 2009 Super Bowl, does this resident want to go and watch compete?

Answer: Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are an NFL franchise that is now found in Glendale, a city that hosted the Super Bowl in 2008. A year later, the Cardinals didn't host the Super Bowl but were competing in it. They lost out by just four points as the Pittsburgh Steelers took the title, 27-23. Still, they have one of the most beautiful birds, with its striking red colour, as their logo.
