This did not happen, however, and Germany went on to beat Argentina, 1-0 with Andreas brehme scoring a penalty in the 85th minute. Gascoigne's incident was not isolated, as the same thing happened to France's Laurent Blanc in the 1998 World Cup semi-final game against Croatia. France went on to lift the trophy without their centre-back, as they beat a lack-lustre Brazil, 3-0.
