Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Wade Boggs started playing in 1982 with the Boston Red Sox. What was the last team he played for from 1998-1999 before retiring?

Answer: Tampa Bay Devil Rays

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays dropped the Devil from their name in 2008, which is why I stated he played for the Devil Rays, not the Rays. Wade Anthony Boggs was born on June 15, 1958. He played third base in the majors for eighteen seasons. The majority of those were with the Red Sox, and he is in both the Red Sox Hall of Fame and the Baseball Hall of Fame as a Red Sox player.

He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame with 91.9% of the votes on the first try. His jersey number 26 was retired with the Sox, and his number 12 was retired with the Rays. Boggs was the first player to have his number retired by the Rays, not including #42, which was retired across the MLB in 1997.
2. Carlton Fisk was the first person voted unanimously as Rookie of the Year when he started with the Red Sox in 1969. With which team did he finish?

Answer: Chicago White Sox

Carlton Ernest Fisk was born on December 26, 1947. He was a catcher and played for the Chicago White Sox from 1981 to 1993. In 1997 he was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame. That same year, the Chicago White Sox retired his jersey number 72. In 2000, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the Red Sox retired his 27 jersey number.

In 2005, the left-field pole at Fenway was named the Fisk pole.
3. Nomar Garciaparra was a shortstop with the Red Sox from 1996-2004. He played with three other teams before retiring in 2009. What was the last team he played with?

Answer: Oakland Athletics

Anthony Nomar Garciaparra was born July 23, 1973. His middle name Nomar is his father's name, Ramon, spelled backward. In between each pitch, Nomar would adjust his gloves and tap his toes, alternating them on the ground. In 2005, he and his uncle Victor heard two women scream as they fell into the Boston Harbor. One of them hit her head on the pier on the way down. Nomar saved both women.

He played a single season with the Oakland Athletics in 2009 and in 2014 he was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame.
4. In 1974, Fred Lynn made his MLB debut with the Red Sox as a centerfielder. He was with them until 1980. He played with four other teams during his career. Which one was his last?

Answer: San Diego Padres

The Angels in the list of choices were The California Angels when he played for them. Fredric Michael Lynn was born on February 3, 1952. He was the first MLB player to win Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in the same year. He played his final season with the Padres in 1990.

In 2002 he was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame. In 2007 he was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
5. I played with the BoSox in 1942, left to serve in the Navy during WWII, and then returned to play with them from 1946-1952. However, I finished with the Washington Senators in 1954. Who am I?

Answer: Johnny Pesky

Johnny Pesky's name may be familiar to people who have never seen him play. The right field foul pole at Fenway is named Pesky's Pole. In 2008, Pesky's jersey number six was retired by the Red Sox. Pesky died on August 13, 2012, at the age of 93. He spent seven decades at Fenway as a player, coach, manager, and broadcaster.
6. Roger "Rocket" Clemens played with the Red Sox from 1984 to 1996; being a diehard Red Sox fan, this one is hard to write, but who did he last play with before retiring in 2007?

Answer: New York Yankees

That's right, Clemens went to the Red Sox's arch-rivals. However, before he got there, he first played with the Toronto Blue Jays from 1997-1998, he played with "the Evil Empire" from 1999-2003, then he went to the Houston Astros from 2004-2006, and then back to the Yankees. Clemens is in the Red Sox Hall of Fame.
7. Mo Vaughn played with the BoSox from 1991-1998, he went to the Anaheim Angels from 1999-2000. Who did he finish with in 2003?

Answer: New York Mets

Maurice "Mo" Samuel Vaughn was born on December 15, 1967. He was a first baseman with the nickname "The Hit Dog." In 1995 he won the Silver Slugger Award. He is also in the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame. While with the Mets, he hit his 300th career homerun against Kip Wells of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
8. Jonathan Papelbon was a fantastic pitcher. He played with the Red Sox from 2005-2011. Who did he last play for?

Answer: Washington Nationals

Papelbon, a relief pitcher, helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 2007. That year he was Delivery Man of the Year. During his career, he had 368 saves. In the Orioles-Nationals game on September 23, 2015, Papelbon intentionally threw a pitch at Manny Machado's head and was immediately ejected.
9. Dwight Evans played with the Red Sox from 1972-1990. He finished with this team, but he was only with them for a short time before retiring. What team was it?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

Evans was an eight-time Gold Glove Award winner (1976, 1978, 1979, 1981-1985) and a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner (1981 and 1987). In 1981, he led the American League in home runs. Evans is in the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame. In 1984, he hit for the cycle. Due to undisclosed medical problems, while signed with the Orioles for a year, Evans was released from his contract during spring training on March 15, 1992.
10. Hugh Bradley played with the Red Sox from 1910-1912. He last played with a Federal League team. Which one was it?

Answer: Newark Pepper

The Federal League of Base Ball Clubs (aka Federal League) was a third major league that briefly competed against the NL and AL. They lasted from 1913-1915. Bradley had the privilege of hitting the first-ever home run in Fenway Park. He was with the Red Sox in 1912 when they won the World Series. That was one of only two home runs Bradley hit in his short career.

He has 117 runs batted in. The Newark Pepper team was one of only two historical major league baseball teams from New Jersey. The other was the Elizabeth Resolutes.
