Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Judo was introduced as a Summer Olympic sport in Tokyo in 1964. However only male judoka (experts in Judo) participated until the 1992 Olympics in which European city?

Answer: Barcelona

Fourteen weight classes were contested for Judo at the Barcelona Olympics, with France, Spain, Cuba, South Korea and China winners of gold in the women's events, and the Unified Team (former Soviet Republics), Brazil, Japan, Poland and Hungary triumphant in the men's events. Female judoka had participated in the previous Games, in Seoul, where it was included, only, as a demonstration sport.
2. Which of the following cycling disciplines was first competed for, at the Olympic Games, during the Atlanta Games in 1996?

Answer: Mountain Biking

At the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyer, Georgia, Bart Brentjens of the Netherlands and Paola Pezzo of Italy had the honour of being the first man and woman (respectively) to win the gold medals for mountain biking at an Olympic Games.

BMX was introduced at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and road racing and track cycling have been staples of the Summer Olympics since the start of the modern Games in Athens in 1896. It should be noted that road racing for women did not debut until the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles.
3. In Rio, in 2016, there were 26 sports represented. Which of the following sports has *NOT* been played at every one of the preceding thirty Games?

Answer: Basketball

There are only five sports that have been in every Olympics and are extremely unlikely ever to be dropped: athletics, swimming, cycling, fencing and gymnastics. When the modern Olympics commenced in 1896, only nine sports were represented. That number increased to 26-28 in the early part of the 21st century until a swag of new sports were announced in 2016 for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Basketball was introduced at the Berlin Olympics in 1936.
4. What a load of shuttlecock! Which sport had to wait until the Barcelona Summer Olympic Games in 1992 to make its long-awaited Games debut?

Answer: Badminton

1992 was the official debut for badminton at the Games but it didn't represent its first appearance there. It was introduced in 1972 at Munich as a demonstration sport. In its first Games there were four events; singles and doubles for both the men and women. A mixed doubles event was introduced in 1996 at the Atlanta Summer Olympic Games.
5. Robin would not have been impressed when which sport was withheld from the Olympic Games programme for more than fifty years until its return in 1972?

Answer: Archery

Archery made its Olympic debut at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France and remained for the next two Olympiads before its removal. It returned for the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium before disappearing again. It was ignored until the Games came to Munich in 1972.

In the years since then to 2016, South Korea has proven to be the most dominant country in the sport securing 39 medals overall (23 gold) with next best being the United States 16 medals (8 gold).
6. Since the Summer Olympics commenced in the Modern Era, fencing has been contested. However, what year did women's foil debut? Many events took place in Olympic Stadium of Colombes.

Answer: Paris, 1924

The rules around foils are quite strict; the target is restricted to the torso, and double touches are disqualified. Points are only scored electronically with the tip of the foil, and in the Olympics, these hits are electronically scored. A bout is won when one competitor reaches fifteen points. A contest is usually nine bouts.

In 1924, twenty three nations had contestants in fencing. Wheelchair fencing became a part of the Summer Paralympics in 1960.
7. Volleyball was introduced into the Olympic games in 1964 in Tokyo. Beach Volleyball is a comparatively new sport. At which Olympics was it introduced?

Answer: Atlanta

Beach Volleyball can trace its origins back to Hawaii in 1915, with the modern adaptation occurring in the 1920 on the beaches of Los Angeles. The sport increased dramatically in popularity in the early 1990s and was rewarded with it being recognised at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.

Interestingly, Brazil (Rio, 2016) and Australia (Sydney, 2000), both of whom have hosted subsequent Olympics, have won gold medals in this sport. Mexico hosted the Olympics in 1968.
8. Which gymnastic discipline was contested for the first time at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles?

Answer: Rhythmic

Rings remain the domain of the men at the Olympic Games and, along with artistic gymnastics have been a part of the Games since 1896. Trampolining was introduced at Sydney, Australia in the year 2000. Rhythmic gymnastics usually involves the manipulation of one or two apparatus though there is a category for freehand (no apparatus).

The items that are employed are rope, hoop, ball, ribbon or club.
9. The Modern Pentathlon has been a feature of the Modern Olympic Games since their inception in 1896.

Answer: False

This event did not make its first appearance at a Summer Olympic Games until 1912 in Stockholm. The event, which is supposed to simulate a soldier's efforts to make an escape from behind enemy lines, consists of five disciplines; epee fencing, pistol shooting, a 200 metre freestyle swim, show-jumping on horseback and a three kilometre cross country run.
10. Demonstration sports are intended to offer the Olympic host an opportunity to showcase sports that are a feature of their country's sporting lexicon. Which one of the following demonstration sports does *NOT* match the host city where it was showcased?

Answer: Budo - Athens 2004

Demonstration sports were once quite frequent events. In 1989, this changed when the International Olympic Committee decided to cease demonstration sports from Olympics Games after 1992, an exception being in 2008, when the Beijing Organizing Committee obtained permission to showcase a wushu tournament.

Budo is a Japanese martial art which was a demonstration sport at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
