Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In football (soccer), which player is allowed to touch the ball with his hand anywhere on the field of play?

Answer: None

Whilst the ball is in play, only the goalkeeper can touch it with his hands, but only within the penalty area. If he touches it outside of this area it is an offence of 'handball', the same as if any other player had handled the ball anywhere on the pitch. Handball is only an offence if the act is deliberate.
2. One of the differences between rugby union and rugby league is the number of players per team. Which position does not exist in a rugby league side?

Answer: Flanker

In rugby union there are 15 players per side, in league there are 13. The two flankers in a union team are members of the scrum and usually wear the numbers six and seven. In union there are eight players in the scrum, in league there are only six.
3. In the game of cricket, from which wood are the bats traditionally made?

Answer: Willow

Cricket bats are usually made from one particular species of willow called, appropriately enough, the cricket bat willow. The wood is chosen because it is light but tough. The bat handles are normally made from cane because it is springy.
4. In international volleyball competitions, how many members are allowed per team, not including substitutes?

Answer: 6

In 1998 a player called the libero was introduced. The libero is a defence specialist and must wear a different colour shirt to the rest of the team. Any defensive player can be replaced by the libero, without notice to match officials, providing the ball is not in play at the time.

The replaced player is the only one that can then take back over from the libero. There are strict rules governing what the libero can and cannot do during the game.
5. In the game of tennis, which of the following is not a type of playing surface?

Answer: Softcourt

Hard courts are usually made from either concrete or asphalt. Clay courts are made from crushing either brick, stone or shale. Grass courts are a blend of different grasses. Wimbledon's grass courts use only rye grass.
The various surfaces have different speeds with, in general, clay being the slowest and grass the fastest. Even within the same types of surface the material used can affect the speed of the game.
6. Kendo is a minority sport outside of Japan. What is the name for someone who practices this martial art?

Answer: Kendoka

Kendoka means 'one who practices kendo'. A much less used name is kenshi which means 'swordsman'.
Kendo, or 'way of the sword' is a martial art using a bamboo sword or 'shinai'. Kendoka wear body armour called bogu.
7. The sport of netball led to the introduction of basketball.

Answer: False

It was the other way round. Basketball was devised in 1891 by James Naismith. Netball began in 1895 as a women's version of basketball. A gym teacher called Clara Baer developed a game which women could play despite the movement restrictions because of their clothing at the time. The game travelled from the USA to England in less than a year.
8. In which country was modern field hockey developed?

Answer: England

Although there are ancient Egyptian drawings that show a game resembling hockey, it is now accepted that the game has its beginnings in the 18th century in England, mainly in schools. The first club was formed in 1849 in south east London.
The general term 'hockey' is dependent on where you live and which version is played the most, ice or field.
Field hockey is the national sport of both India and Pakistan.
9. There are some very strange sports that happen in various parts of the world. Which one of the listed events is not a real one?

Answer: Llama wrestling

Despite hours (all right, minutes) of looking, I couldn't find anything on llama wrestling as a sport. Some people may do it for fun, you never know. All of the others are recognised as sports. If you don't believe me, look them up! Elephant polo is played just like traditional polo, except elephants are used instead of horses.
10. Up to, and including, the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which of the following sports had not been included in any of the official modern Games?

Answer: Water skiing

Both croquet and cricket were last included in 1900 and golf was played in both 1900 and 1904. Water skiing was a demonstration sport in 1972.
