Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which pitching save specialist in 2007 became the first in history to reach 500 saves in a career?

Answer: Trevor Hoffman

The others all retired before the 2000 season. Hoffman was in his 15th season, and all but four decisions with the Padres. Trevor also reached his season 50-win mark in 2007. He had still not started a game. Smith was the career leader in saves when he retired in 1997 with 478, before Hoffman put him in the number two spot.
2. How many National League teams opened the season with new managers?

Answer: 5

Florida, Chicago, Washington, Padres, and Giants were the teams. The Marlins went from Joe Giradi to Fredi Gonzalez, the Cubs replaced Dusty Baker with Lou Piniella, the Nationals replaced Frank Robinson with Manny Acta, the Padres went with Bud Black after Bruce Bochy, and the Giants found themselves with Bruce Bochy after replacing Felipe Alou.
3. No Major League team took a commanding edge to begin the season. Which team lost eight of their first ten games?

Answer: Washington Nationals

In the Nationals' opening 10 games, they were only able to put up 23 runs, compared to 61 by their opponents. No Washington starter won a game in their first 10. In 2006, the team went 71-91.
4. Which 2006 Manager of the Year did not return to the same team on opening day in the 2007 season?

Answer: Joe Girardi

Girardi managed the Marlins in 2006 to a 78-84 record, his first managerial season in the Majors. He was replaced by Fredi Gonzalez, who saw his first MLB managing job also in 2007.
5. Which of the following players retired after the 2005 season, then found himself on an opening day roster in 2007?

Answer: Sammy Sosa

The others all retired before 2000. Sammy played most of his career with the Cubs, and retired as an Oriole in 2005. Sitting out 2006, he signed as a free agent with the Texas Rangers for 2007.
6. At the all-star break in 2007, all the American League division leaders all had won at least 50 games in the season. How many National League teams reached the 50-win mark at the all-star break?

Answer: 0

The Angels were the first team in the Majors to reach 50 games in the win column. At the all-star break, they reflected 53 against only 35 losses. The NL didn't fare very well as the Brewers and Padres won 49, and the NL East leader Mets had only won 48.
7. Eric Gagne, the 2003 Los Angeles Dodger Cy Young winner found himself on the Texas Rangers' roster in 2007. On July 31, 2007, he was traded in a multi-player trade to which team?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Gagne was noted for his saves for the Dodgers from 2002-2004, and set many records for it. After some major injuries after the 2004 season, he appeared in only 16 games in the next two seasons for the Dodgers. In Texas in 2007, Eric appeared in 16 games for the Rangers before the trade to the Red Sox became a reality. Boston sought a mid-game reliever instead of the save and closure specialist that Gagne was known for of the past.
8. On August 31st, Tony LaRussa became the Cardinals' most winning manager. Which manager did he surpass for Cardinal career wins?

Answer: Red Schoendienst

Red managed the Cardinals for 14 seasons, beginning in 1965. His 1041 Cardinal wins was passed by LaRussa in 12 seasons. Schoendienst went to two World Series with one win, and LaRussa had already been to two with St. Louis.
9. How many Major League teams in 2007 changed managers after the season began?

Answer: 4

The teams were Cincinnati, Houston, Baltimore, and Seattle. In 2006, no team changed their managers after the season started.
10. Which 2007 Reds second baseman broke Joe Morgan's Reds' 1976 record of 27 home runs by a Reds second baseman in franchise history?

Answer: Brandon Phillips

None of the others ever played for Cincinnati, nor played second base, and had already retired before 2007. Phillips was in his sixth season, four playing with Cleveland in limited duty before becoming a Red in 2006. After a previous season high of six home runs with the Indians, Brandon hit 17 with the Reds in 2006.
