Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first official Head Coach of the MSU football team?

Answer: Henry Keep

Taking the reins in 1897, Henry Keep coached the Spartans for 2 years leading them to a record of 8-5-1 (.607). Before Keep, there was no established head coach.
2. In 2004, how many Spartan First-Team All-Americans did they have in the season?

Answer: 1

In 2004 Punter, Brandon Fields, was the only Spartan voted to be a First-Team All-American. As a sophomore in 2004, Fields led the nation in punting with his 47.9 yard average.
3. In 1904, the MSU Football team defeated the Michigan School for the Deaf by a score of 47-0.

Answer: True

Michigan State played this unlikely team 4 times in the early 1900s, holding them scoreless in each outing. The largest margin of victory was a 51-0 drubbing in 1908.
4. In terms of winning percentage, which of these was the most successful Spartan Head Coach?

Answer: Clarence "Biggy" Munn

Between the years of 1947-53, Munn led the Spartans to a tremendous record of 54-9-2 (.857), including two National Championships (1951, 1952) and one Big Ten Championship (1953).
5. Which rivalry trophy is handed out to the winner of the Michigan State University-Indiana University game?

Answer: Old Brass Spittoon

Since 1950, the winner of the Michigan State-Indiana game has been presented the Old Brass Spittoon. The trophy was initiated by the junior and senior classes and the MSU student council at Michigan State, and soon accepted by the IU Student Senate. The brass spittoon came from one of Michigan's earliest trading posts and is widely believed to be nearly 150 years old.
6. 1902 brought the second time Michigan State would battle the University of Michigan. What was the final score of this fierce rivalry game?

Answer: MSU-0 UM-119

This was the worst beating in the next 100 years that UM would put on the Spartans. After this game, the Spartans would drop 26 of their next 30 games to the University of Michigan Wolverines.
7. Who was the first Spartan to be drafted into the NFL?

Answer: Sid Wagner

Wagner was drafted by the Detroit Lions as the 8th overall pick in the 1936 NFL Draft. Wagner was an offensive guard for the Spartans, he was a consensus First-Team All-American and captain of the team in 1935.
8. How many 100-yard receiving games did Kirk Gibson have during his illustrious MSU career?

Answer: 7

Kirk Gibson who also played Spartan Baseball, had a high game of 173-yards against N.C. State in 1976, which at the time was the highest single game mark by any MSU receiver. This record would remain Gibson's until it was broke by Plaxico Burress in 2002 (175-yards against Notre Dame).
9. How many Heisman Trophy winners did MSU produce in their first 100 years?

Answer: 0

Despite the many excellent football players to come out of MSU, none had won the coveted Heisman Memorial Trophy Award.
10. This player was on the team from 1997-2001. He played wide receiver as well as kick returner. He returned 2 kickoffs for touchdowns in 2001. In his career he caught 115 passes, for 1,640 yards and 7 touchdowns. Who was this that wore the jersey number 2?

Answer: Herb Haygood

Herb Haygood is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated wide receivers in MSU history. Haygood is best know for his performance in the 2000 game against Notre Dame, the Spartans were down by 7 with only 1:48 seconds left in the 4th quarter, it was 4th down with 10 yards to go.

The Irish sent an all out blitz at Jeff Smoker and he hit Haygood on a slant route to bust a 68-yard scoring pass!
