Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What nickname did pitcher Johnny Schmitz have?

Answer: Bear Tracks

Johnny Schmitz was the first player to have been thrown out of a major league baseball game for illegally sharpening his spikes (Ty Cobb was accused of doing this several times).
2. What nickname did Mike Hargrove earn for taking so long in the batter's box?

Answer: The Human Rain Delay

Hargrove earned this nickname for taking so much time between pitches adjusting his uniform, taking practice swings, and fidgeting. He also took a lot of pitches and hit a lot of foul balls.
3. Bob Ferguson, the first manager for the Philadelphia Phillies, had what nickname as a player?

Answer: Death to Flying Things

He allegedly got this nickname for his ability to catch anything. Supposedly he also had a habit of swatting at flies and throwing baseballs at seagulls during warm-ups. When I see this nickname, I imagine a wild swinger at the plate.
4. Benny Meyer earned what painful sounding nickname?

Answer: Earache

Earache Meyer got this nickname from opponents who were annoyed at his constant shouting from the bench.
5. Doug Gwosdz, catcher for the San Diego Padres, was called what by his teammates?

Answer: Eyechart

Gwodsz (pronounced "Goosh") got this nickname from the way his last name looked on the back of his jersey.
6. Jimmy Bannon, a pitcher and outfielder for the Boston Beaneaters in the 1890s, had what familiar nickname?

Answer: Foxy Grandpa

I don't know how he got this nickname. He had a four year career from 1893-1896, and retired with a .320 batting average.
7. Gavvy Cravath was nicknamed after which plant?

Answer: Cactus

"Cactus" Gavvy Cravath led the 1915 Philadelphia Phillies and the league by hitting a massive (in that era) 24 home runs in the season.
8. Pitcher Russ Meyer had what unusual nickname?

Answer: The Mad Monk

"Before a game in St. Louis in 1955, Russ (Meyer) was sitting alone in the Dodgers dugout. He picked up an old baseball, looked at it carefully, and said, speaking to himself and to no one: 'Just think of it. This little ball causes all of the trouble.'" - James T. Farrell. This quote I guess sums up a lot about the psyche of this guy.
9. Antonio Alfonseca has what Spanish nickname?

Answer: El Pulpo

El Pulpo means the octopus in Spanish. Alfonseca has six fingers on each hand.
10. What nickname did Dicky Stuart earn because of his terrible fielding?

Answer: Doctor Strangeglove

My favorite nickname. The movie "Doctor Strangelove" came out at the height of his career.
