1. Which team was not an original member of the NHL?

Answer: New York Rangers

The original NHL teams were Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs, Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Arenas. New York did not join until 1926.
2. What year did the NHL form?

Answer: 1917

The Montreal Wanderers' arena burnt down and they withdrew from the league on January 4, 1918. Although a founder member the Quebec Bulldogs immediately announced they would take a leave of absence, and did not play in the inaugural season. The franchise was sold to P J Quinn of Toronto in 1918 on the condition that the team played in Quebec but the team did not play in the second NHL season.

The team played its only NHL season in 1919-20 before the franchise was transferred to the Hamilton Tigers, who joined the NHL in 1920.
3. Which team won the Stanley Cup the first year of the NHL?

Answer: Toronto Arenas

Toronto Arenas defeated the Vancouver Millionaires of the PCHA.

Hamilton Tigers (formed from the failing Quebec Bulldogs franchise)played from 1920-21 to the 1924-25 season, when they relocated to New York.

Answer: Montreal Maroons and Boston Bruins

Boston became the first US NHL team, and would win its first Stanley Cup in 1929. Montreal Maroons would win the Cup twice in there history. First in 1926 and again in 1935. The Maroons would win the Cup in 1926 and 1935, then fold in 1938.
6. 1967 was the year the NHL expanded from 6 to 12 teams. Which team was one of the '67 expansion teams?

Answer: California Golden Seals

California Golden Seals (also known as Oakland Seals) survived in the NHL from 1967 - 76 before moving to Cleveland for 2 seasons as the Barons. They then merged with the Minnesota North Stars. Buffalo and Vancouver join NHL in the 1970-71 season. Kansas City Scouts joined NHL in 1974 and played 2 season before moving to Colorado becoming the Rockies until 1982.

The franchise then moved to New Jersey becoming the Devils.
7. In 1991 the San Jose Sharks joined the NHL. The roster of an existing expansion team was split in two to create the Sharks. Which team had its roster split?

Answer: Minnesota North Stars

The Gund brothers, owners of the Minnesota North Stars, sold the Stars in exchange for the San Jose franchise and half the Stars roster. An expansion draft was then held for both teams. The Stars have gone onto move to Dallas and win a Stanley Cup.
8. The Tampa Bay Lightning made NHL history in 1992 by doing this?

Answer: Having a woman play for them

Manon Rheaume and the Tampa Bay Lightning made history in a NHL pre-season game when she played a period in goal against the St. Louis Blues. Rheaume became the first woman to play for a men's (NHL) professional sports team.
9. Which former WHA team that join the NHL in 1979 is still in its original city?

Answer: Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton has had great success in the NHL winning 5 Stanley Cups. The Quebec Nordiques franchise won a cup the its first year in Colorado in 1995-96. Hartford moved to Carolina in '97 and Winnipeg moved to Phoenix in '96.
10. Which of these NHL teams was not a return to a city that previously had a NHL team?

Answer: Washington Capitals

Minnesota previously had the North Stars (1967 - 1993). Atlanta previously had the Atlanta Flames (1972 - 1980), who became the Calgary Flames in 1980. Pittsburgh previously had the Pittsburg Pirates (1925 - 1930), who then moved to Philadelphia and played two seasons as the Quakers before folding.
