Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of the four New York teams, which one saw World Series action first?

Answer: Giants

The New York Giants went to the second Worlds Series in history in 1905. They faced the AL pennant winning Philadelphia Athletics. In revenge of the American League winning the first World Series (Boston Pilgrims) in 1903, the Giants put away the Athletics, four games to one. New York was led by pitching great Christy Mathewson, who threw three complete games, and all three were shutouts. Strangely enough, all five games in the series resulted in shutouts.
2. When this team donned their uniforms and began their membership of the major leagues, they lost over 100 games in each of their first four seasons. Who was that dismal team?

Answer: New York Mets

The Mets joined the Major Leagues in 1962 as an expansion team along with the Houston Colt .45s (later Astros). After great success with the Yankees, manager Casey Stengel crossed the tracks to help the Mets in their beginning seasons. It did not work out as the Mets lost 452 games in 5 seasons from 1962-1966. Mets pitcher Roger Craig helped the team by losing over 20 games himself in each of their first two seasons.

After finishing no better than ninth or tenth in each of their first seven seasons, they won the World Series in 1969 against the Baltimore Orioles.
3. Which of these teams while a member of Major League Baseball, was the first to have a pitcher win 27+ games in a season?

Answer: New York Giants

The great Christy Mathewson won 37 games in the 1908 season with the Giants. Carl Mays won 27 with the Yankees in 1921. Don Newcombe of the Brooklyn Dodgers won 27 in 1956, earning him the first Cy Young award presented. The Mets could only muster a 25-game winner in the name of Tom Seaver in the 1969 season. Seaver was the Mets' top winner of the century.
4. Which team had a Rookie of the Year first?

Answer: Brooklyn Dodgers

The Rookie of the Year award began in 1947, and the Dodgers' Jackie Robinson was the first recepient of the award. The Dodgers had two rookie winners before the other teams, the other winner being Don Newcombe in 1949. The Yankees and Giants both experienced their first rookie winners in 1951.

The Giants of New York saw the great Willie Mays, and the Yankees saw Gil McDougald win it for them. The first Mets winner was Tom Seaver in 1967.
5. Most baseball fans know that Babe Ruth was the first player to hit 500 home runs in a career. Some might even know that the great Jimmie Foxx of the Athletics and Red Sox was the second player to reach this amazing plateau. Who was the third player to hit 500 in history?

Answer: Mel Ott - New York Giants

Ott played his entire career for the Giants from 1926-1947. The left-handed slugger belted out 511. Gehrig hit 493 home runs in his great career. Snider straddled his career between the Dodgers of Brooklyn and Los Angeles, but hit only 389 in his career. Strawberry hit only 252 in a Mets uniform and retired with 335.
6. Which of the following managing greats never managed the Yankees, Dodgers, Mets, or Giants?

Answer: Wilbert Robinson

After managing for only one season with the Baltimore Orioles in 1902, and after a 12-year layoff, Robinson began an 18 consecutive season run with Brooklyn. However, throughout Wilbert's entire run with Brooklyn, the team was known as the Robins from 1914-1931. Hodges helmed the Mets from 1968-1971. John McGraw managed the New York Giants for an amazing 31 seasons from 1902-1932.

After eight seasons of managing the Cubs, Frank Chance was in charge of the Yankees in their first season in 1913. McCarthy later took the Yankees to eight World Series.
7. Which New York team had Joe Medwick, Dixie Walker, Herman Franks, and Paul Waner all play for them in the same season?

Answer: Brooklyn Dodgers

All those greats played for another New York team at some point in their career other than the Dodgers. 1941 was the season, and they all helped Brooklyn to a 100-54 record, good enough to meet the Yankees in the World Series. The Dodgers lost however, four games to one.

The Yankees were led by their own all-star cast of Joe DiMaggio, Joe Gordon, Red Ruffing, Tommy Henrich, and Lefty Gomez.
8. Which of the New York teams was the first to lose 100 games in a season?

Answer: New York Mets

Amazingly, none of the others lost 100 games in a season during the entire 20th century, which showed the class of those New York teams. The Giants came close in 1933 however, when they lost 98. The Mets lost 120 games in their inaugural season in 1962. They went on to lose over 100+ in their next three seasons also.
9. Which of these teams was the first to appear in three consecutive World Series?

Answer: New York Giants

After winning the 1905 World Series, the Giants went to three consecutive 1911-12-1913. They lost all three, two being to the Athletics and the other against the Red Sox. The Yankee name did not come into baseball until 1913, and their prior Highlanders never made it to a World Series.

The Yankees found the promised land from 1921-1923. The Brooklyn Dodgers never went to three consecutive World Series.
10. Which of these New York teams won the most games in a season in the first 100 years of the Major Leagues from 1901-2000?

Answer: New York Yankees

The Yankees topped this great mark by winning 114 games in 1998, while the Dodgers were at the bottom of the pile with 105 in 1953. In-between were the Mets who won 108 in 1986, then the Giants won 106 in 1904. The Yankee team name began in 1913. The franchise was the Highlanders from 1903-1912, and the Baltimore Orioles in 1901 and 1902.

The New York Giants name began in 1885 in the National League, then became a part of the Major Leagues in 1901 when the new American League joined in. The Brooklyn Dodgers were in existence in 1911 and 1912, then from 1935-1957.

The Brooklyn club had many team names including the Robins, Atlantics, Grays, Grooms, Bridegrooms, Superbas, and Dodgers. The Mets began in 1962 and continued their name throughout the century.
