Home plate ump Doug Harvey called it trapped, but the umps at 1st & 3rd base said Ruhle caught the ball on the fly. After the putout at first, which was a double play, Howe ran to 2nd to complete a triple play.

The 6 umps huddled and then Harvey talked with League President Chub Feeney. The 20-minute argument resulted with no triple play, just a double play. Since time had been called before Howe tagged Bake McBride, Harvey disallowed that out at second. Both teams protested the game.
