Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Philadelphia baseball franchise began in which year?

Answer: 1883

The franchise began in 1883 in the National League as the Philadelphia Quakers. Unfortunately, they finished in the eighth and last place with a record of 17-81, 46 games behind the league-leader Boston Braves. John Coleman was their 'star' pitcher, and went 12-48 for the season. They changed their name to the Phillies after the 1889 season.
2. From their inception of the franchise, the Philadelphia Phillies has always been named the 'Phillies'?

Answer: False

The franchise tried a new look in 1943 and 1944, and changed their name to the Blue Jays. Their win-loss record did not improve, so they went back to the Phillies' name in 1945.
3. How many World Series did the Phillies win in their first 100 years?

Answer: 1

With the franchise beginning in 1883, their first and only win in the promised land occurred in 1980, defeating the Royals four games to two, and watching Mike Schmidt win the series MVP.
4. The Phillies went to five World Series in their first 100 years of existence. When was their first trip?

Answer: 1915

In the other seasons listed, they finished in last place. Their first franchise glory came in 1915 under the management of Pat Moran. The Phillies went 90-62, and won the NL pennant by seven games over the Braves. With only one .300 hitter in first baseman Fred Luderus, the Phillies took on the Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox won the series four games to one, and the Phillies' Grover Cleveland Alexander won their only game. This was Babe Ruth's second season, he did not pitch in the series, and went hitless in one at-bat.
5. How many Phillie pitchers won 25+ games for the franchise during the seven decades 1910s to 1970s?

Answer: 4

This happened six times in the first 100 years of the franchise, but by only four pitchers. The great Grover Cleveland 'Pete' Alexander won 28 in 1911, 31 in 1915, 33 in 1916, and 30 in 1917. Alexander was an easy Hall of Fame candidate in 1938. Tom Seaton won 27 in 1913. Phillie pitcher Robin Roberts won 28 in 1952, and the great Steve Carlton won 27 in 1972.

The franchise began in 1883.
6. In the Phillies' first 100 seasons, who was the first to hit 50 home runs in a season?

Answer: Nobody did

Outfielder Chuck Klein hit 43 in 1929, and that team record held until Mike Schmidt topped that with 45 in 1979. Mike broke his own mark with 48 in 1980.
7. The Phillies had not been noted for speed, and put their money towards batting and pitching. As a result, they had only one batter steal more than 55 bases during the entire 20th century. Who was this batter that claimed the 'speedster' name for the franchise?

Answer: Juan Samuel

Of the other options, Schmidt stole a season-high of 29 in 1975, and the other two never stole more than eight in a season. Samuel stole 72 bases in his rookie season 1984. His efforts along with others gave him the runner-up Rookie of the Year honors for the season. Juan retired in 1998 after 16 seasons in the majors.
8. From 1971-2003, where did the Phillies play their home games?

Answer: Veterans Stadium

The team welcomed the new stadium with three consecutive last place finishes before finishing third in 1974, second in 1975, then first in 1976. This was the era of Mike Schmidt, and the Phillies went on to win their first World Series in 1980.
9. Who managed the team to their first World Series title?

Answer: Dallas Green

Ozark had the team from 1973-1979, then Green took the reins for two seasons. In 1982, it was Pat Corrales. Felske managed the team beginning in 1985.
10. Throughout the entire 20th century, a lot of teams had a player who hit .400 in a season. The Phillies franchise did not, but who came the closest by hitting .398?

Answer: Lefty O'Doul

Lefty O'Doul was the only option who played for the Phillies. O'Doul hit a tear-jerking .398 in 1929. He had 254 hits in the season. In 1930, he followed it up with hitting .383 with over 200 hits again.
