Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Colorado Rockies joined baseball's National League in 1993; and in 2007 made it all the way to the World Series (it was their first WS appearance). Which American League team beat them 4-0?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

The Rockies play their home games at Coors Field in Denver. In 2007, they defeated the San Diego Padres in a one-game play-off to gain a wild card into the play-offs, then proceeded to sweep both the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks to reach the World Series. Their fairytale season ended there though, as the Red Sox won their second Fall Classic in four seasons.
2. The Colorado Avalanche are an NHL team who have played home games in Denver since season 1995-96. By what name were they known prior to that season?

Answer: Quebec Nordiques

The Quebec Nordiques were originally members of the WHA from 1972-79, before being absorbed into the NHL. The financial pressures of playing in the league's smallest market led to them relocating to Denver in 1995 and becoming the Avalanche. The new-look franchise couldn't have got off to a better start, winning the Stanley Cup in their very first season in Colorado, with a 4-0 sweep of the Florida Panthers in the finals.

In 2001 they triumphed again, defeating the New Jersey Devils 4-3.
3. Colorado is home to three FBS college football programs. Which one of these cities is NOT the site of the main campus for one of these schools?

Answer: Denver

Boulder is the site of the Univeristy of Colorado; Fort Collins is home to Colorado State University; and the US Air Force Academy is based in Colorado Springs. Denver hasn't been home to a top-level college gridiron program since the University of Denver dropped football following the 1960 season - however, in the early 21st century, the state capital was regularly hosting (as a neutral site) the annual Colorado-Colorado State match-up.
4. Colorado was formerly the site of an annual event on the PGA golf tour known as The International. Under what unique format was this event contested?

Answer: Stableford

The International was first contested at Castle Rock, Colorado, in 1986. It was the only event on the PGA tour in which the Stableford scoring system was used. This system awards nothing for a double bogey, one point for a bogey, two points for a par, three for a birdie, four for an eagle, and so on. Sadly for Colorado golf fans, the tournament was included in the PGA schedule for the final time in 2006.
5. Which world heavyweight boxing champion was nicknamed the "Manassa Mauler" after the Colorado town where he was born?

Answer: Jack Dempsey

Manassa is a small town in southern Colorado, near the border with New Mexico. Dempsey was born there in 1895. He won the world heavweight title in 1919, defeating Jess Willard in Cleveland. He would remain champion for seven years, before losing to Gene Tunney in Philadelphia in 1926.
6. The Denver Broncos have been playing pro football since 1960. Their defense during the late 1970s/early 1980s was one of the most fearsome in the NFL - what was the nickname by which they were known at the time?

Answer: Orange Crush

The Broncos wore orange shirts during this period, thus the obvious nickname attributed to them. Key members included defensive lineman Lyle Alzado and linebackers Joe Rizzo and Randy Gradishar. The Orange Crush helped the Broncos go all the way to Superbowl XII in January, 1978, where they fell short in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
7. Eddie Eagan, from Denver, is one of an elite group of athletes who have won gold medals in both the Summer and Winter Olympics. In which sports did he achieve success?

Answer: Boxing and Bobsleigh

Eagan took part in the boxing competition in Antwerp in 1920. He won gold in the light-heavyweight division, defeating Norway's Sverre Sorsdal in the final. Twelve years later, in Lake Placid, he was a member of the four-man bobsleigh team which won gold for the USA.
8. The Denver Nuggets basketball team have been members of the NBA since 1976, but originally played in the ABA from 1967-1976. What was the team's nickname during their ABA days?

Answer: Rockets

The franchise joined the ABA in 1967 as the Denver Rockets. In 1974, anticipating a move to the NBA, the team decided to change their nickname as the name Rockets was already in use by the NBA's Houston franchise. They chose Nuggets in honor of a previous NBA team which had played in the city from 1948-1950.
9. Which three-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 was born in Colorado Springs?

Answer: Bobby Unser

Bobby Unser was the brother, father and uncle of racing drivers as well as being an accomplished one himself. He won the Indianapolis 500 in 1968, 1975 and 1981. He won the season-long USAC Indy championship twice - in 1968 and 1974.
10. Which multiple Cy Young Award winning pitcher was born in Denver, Colorado, in 1977?

Answer: Roy Halladay

Halladay grew up in the Denver suburb of Arvada, and was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1995. He made his MLB debut in 1998, and won his first Cy Young Award in 2003. He was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in December, 2009, and won another Cy Young Award in his first season in the City of Brotherly Love.

This accolade made him only the fifth pitcher in history to win the Cy Young in both the American and National Leagues
