Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Pittsburgh Penguins were an NHL expansion team in 1967. Who was their head coach when they won their first Stanley Cup in 1991?

Answer: Bob Johnson

The Penguins had never even won their division prior to the 1990/91 season, but, with "Super" Mario Lemieux on board, they swept all before them in 1991, defeating the Minnesota North Stars 4-2 in the finals. Sadly, there was to be no happy ending for coach Johnson, who died of brain cancer just weeks after his greatest triumph.
2. Which college football team (playing at home!) would you be watching if you visited Beaver Stadium in State College, Pennsylvania?

Answer: Penn State Nittany Lions

Beaver Stadium opened in 1960 and had a capacity in 2012 of 106,572. The Panthers share Heinz Stadium with the NFL Pittsburgh Steelers. The Owls share Lincoln Financial Field with the NFL Philadelphia Eagles. The Quakers play home games at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
3. In 2007, which Pennsylvania golf course hosted the men's US Open for a record eighth time?

Answer: Oakmont

Oakmont Country Club is situated near Pittsburgh. As well as being host of the US Open eight times between 1927 and 2007, it has also hosted three PGA Championships and numerous US Amateur Championships and US Women's Opens. Major winners there include Ben Hogan at the 1953 US Open, Jack Nicklaus at the 1962 US Open and Sam Snead at the 1951 PGA.
4. The Philadelphia Phillies finally won their first World Series in 1980, defeating which team in six games?

Answer: Kansas City Royals

The Phillies were the last of the "original sixteen" franchises to win a first series crown. After coming off second-best to the Boston Red Sox in 1915 and the New York Yankees in 1950, they made it third time lucky in 1980. Steve Carlton pitched two wins and Mike Schmidt hit three homers during the series as the Royals were overcome by four games to two.
5. Which Pennsylvania circuit hosts a NASCAR race each year?

Answer: Pocono Raceway

Pocono Raceway is located just off Interstate 80 in Monroe county in northeast Pennsylvania. Opened in 1971, the track hosted the Pocono 500 Indy Car race each year from 1971 until 1979. The Pennsylvania 400 NASCAR event was first held there in 1974, with the Pocono 400 joining it in 1982.
6. Which Pennsylvania college were the surprise winners of the 1985 NCAA men's basketball championship?

Answer: Villanova Wildcats

Coached by Rollie Massimino, the Wildcats were unranked at the end of the regular season. Seeded eighth in the Southeast region of the play-offs, they defeated Dayton, Michigan, Maryland and North Carolina to reach the final four in Lexington. A semi-final victory over Memphis State saw them through to the championship match against hot favourites Georgetown.

Helped by MVP Ed Pinckney, the Wildcats prevailed 66-64 to create one of the biggest upsets in NCAA basketball history.
7. In February 2009, the Pittsburgh Steelers became the first NFL team to win six Superbowls. Which is NOT one of the teams that they defeated in one of those six games?

Answer: Green Bay Packers

The Steelers defeated the Vikings in Superbowl IX, the Cowboys in both Superbowls X and XIII, and the Rams in Superbowl XIV. After a loss to the Cowboys in Superbowl XXX, they added further titles in Superbowls XL and XLIII against the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals respectively. The Packers were victorious over the Steelers in Superbowl XLV.
8. Which small Pennsylvania town is the location each August of the Little League World Series?

Answer: South Williamsport

South Williamsport is located in Lycoming County in north central Pennsylvania. The LLWS has been held in the area every year since it was first contested in 1947. Sixteen teams take part in the competition, eight from the USA and eight from other countries.
9. The Philadelphia 76ers began NBA play in the City of Brotherly Love in 1963, having previously been known as the Syracuse Nationals. They were a replacement for which other franchise which had departed Philadelphia for California a year earlier?

Answer: Warriors

The Warriors won two NBA titles in Philadelphia, in 1947 and 1956. They departed for San Francisco in 1962, before moving across the bay to Oakland and renaming themselves the Golden State Warriors. The Syracuse Nationals were losing money around that time, so took the opportunity to move into the vacant Philadelphia market.

The renamed 76ers brought two NBA championships to Philadelphia during the 20th century - in 1967 and 1983.
10. The Philadelphia Freedoms are a team in which sport?

Answer: Tennis

The Freedoms compete in World Team Tennis. The original incarnation of the team only lasted one season, 1974, and are best remembered for the Elton John song "Philadelphia Freedom", which he penned as a tribute to team member Billie Jean King. A new Freedoms franchise was launched in 2001, and in 2012 featured well-known retired pros such as John McEnroe and Martina Hingis.
