Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first African-American quarterback to pass for 3000 yards in a season?

Answer: Doug Williams

Williams was a 1978 Tampa Bay Buccaneer rookie. In 1980, he led the team to a 5-10-1 record, throwing for 3396 yards, with a TD/INT ratio of 20-16. Williams blamed the 5-10-1 record for him never making the Pro Bowl. In 1981, he encored the season by throwing 3563 yards with 19 TDs and 14 INTs.
2. Who was the first receiver in history to catch 20 touchdown passes in a season?

Answer: Jerry Rice

Rice was the only one listed who caught 20 in a season, and even after Jerry's 1987 wonderous season, 20 seasons later he was still the only one to do it. Amazingly, Rice played in only 12 games in that 1987 season, catching 65 passes with 22 resulting in a touchdown. The passes came from Joe Montana and Steve Young.
3. This offensive lineman of the 1920s and 1930s, starred with four championship teams. Three as a Packer and one as a Giant. He was inducted into Pro Football's Hall of Fame, then later became affiliated with Major League baseball, and ended up in that Hall of Fame also. Who was this?

Answer: Robert Hubbard

After retiring from pro football, Robert "Cal" Hubbard, along with his big size, became a Major League umpire for many seasons, and was inducted into that hall in 1976, one year before his death. He was inducted into the NFLs hall in 1963.
4. The Brooklyn Dodgers played in the NFL for 14 seasons. What then became of the team?

Answer: They changed their name to the Brooklyn Tigers

The Dodgers played in the NFL from 1930-1943 and never won a division title. They came close in 1940 and 1941 while having a Hall of Fame fullback in 1940, then the NFL leading rusher in 1941. These players were Ace Parker and Pug Manders. The franchise bedcame the Brooklyn Tigers in 1944.
5. This Oakland Raider defensive back sued Steeler head coach Chuck Noll for referring to him as, "Part of the criminal element in the NFL." Who was this Raider back in 1977?

Answer: George "Butch" Atkinson

This occurred after the Raiders 16-7 win over Pittsburgh in week two of the 1977 season. The trial didn't last long, and the jury ruled in favor of Noll, after the jury was presented with on-field tapes of Butch. Atkinson was a two-time Pro Bowler, and retired as a Bronco after the 1979 season.
6. In the AFL's first season in 1960, the Los Angeles Chargers seemed to have everything going for them, until their leading receiver died of a diabetes attack. Who was this wide receiver?

Answer: Ralph Anderson

Anderson was in his second season of pro football in 1960. His rookie season was in 1958 with the NFL Bears, catching only 11 passes in the season. As a Charger, Ralph compiled 44 receptions for 614 yards and 5 touchdowns. He played in only 10 games in the season, and the Chargers went on to a 10-4 season. They lost the AFL Championship game to the Houston Oilers, 24-16.
7. The Rams had some 'deacons' in their history. Not the religious kind, but the nickname kind. In the 1960s, the Rams had future Hall of Fame defensive lineman, David "Deacon" Jones. In the 1950s, the Rams had which other "Deacon" as a fullback?

Answer: Dan Towler

The Rams had some interesting running back nicknames in the 1950s. They included Tank Younger, Skeets Quinlan, Paul "Bearer" Barry, and Dan "Deacon" Towler. Towler played from 1950-1955, scoring 43 touchdowns for the Norm VanBrocklin led Rams.
8. Misused or just being a workhorse, who was the first running back in history to carry the ball 400 times in a season?

Answer: James Wilder

The others never carried the ball 400 times in a season. Wilder went from 161 carries in 1983, to 407 for the Buccaneers in 1984. He rushed for 1544 yards for a 3.8 average and 13 TDs in his record-setting season. Eric Dickerson was the second running back in history to carry the ball for more than 400 times in a season in 1986 with the Rams, then Jamal Anderson was the third with 410 for the Atlanta Falcons in 1998.
9. The Seattle Seahawks became a NFL expansion team in 1976. Who did they select as their primary quarterback in their first season?

Answer: Jim Zorn

Zorn played nine of his eleven seasons as a Seahawk. Unfortunately, in his rookie season in 1976, his TD/INT ratio was 12-27. In those nine Seahawk seasons, he only had a plus rating only twice with TD/INTs. He did throw for over 3000 yards three times. Seattle's backup quarterback selected in 1976 was Bill Munson, a former Ram and Lion.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were also an expansion team in 1976, and they selected Steve Spurrier to lead their team. After nine seasons with the 49ers, Spurrier didn't do much with the Bucs, having a TD/INT ratio of 7-12, and watched the Bucs go 0-14 for the season.

This was Steve's last season in the NFL.
10. The first NFL draft was conducted in 1936. Which Hall of Famer and Philadelphia Eagle owner was credited with beginning the draft process?

Answer: Bert Bell

The draft didn't help the Eagles in 1936 as they finished the season off with a 1-11 record. Ironically, the first-ever draft pick was Jay Berwanger, a Heisman winner who was selected by the Eagles in 1936. The running back did not want to turn pro, never signed with the Eagles, and never played in the NFL.
