Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Super Bowl IV was the first Super Bowl played outside of Florida or California. What stadium, home to a 'Green Wave' fan base, hosted Super Bowl IV?

Answer: Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana

The Tulane Green Wave played their home games at Tulane Stadium from 1926 to 1974 and the New Orleans Saints of the NFL called Tulane Stadium home from 1967 to 1974. The stadium hosted the NCAA Sugar Bowl for 40 years and three Super Bowls. Super Bowl I was played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Super Bowls II and III were played at the Orange Bowl in Miami.
2. Super Bowl IV was the last championship game played between the American Football League (AFL) and National Football League (NFL) before the leagues merged in 1970. What team, coached by John Madden, did the Kansas City Chiefs beat in the 1969 AFL Championship game to qualify for Super Bowl IV?

Answer: Oakland Raiders

The Chiefs defeated the Raiders 17-7 in the game and wide receiver Otis Taylor was named the game's MVP. As the two leagues merged shortly after Super Bowl IV, this game was the last AFL Championship Game. In total there were 10 AFL Championship Games. The Houston Oilers, Buffalo Bills, and Kansas City Chiefs all won the AFL Championship multiple times.
3. The 1969 NFL Championship Game was played to determine which team would represent the NFL in Super Bowl IV. Which player was the quarterback of the losing Cleveland Browns?

Answer: Bill Nelsen

The Cleveland Browns lost to the Minnesota Vikings 27-7 in the 1969 NFL Championship Game. In the game Nelsen threw two costly interceptions that put his defense in a poor position. The game was played in extremely cold conditions (-13 degrees Celsius, 8 degrees Fahrenheit) and one player had to be taken to the hospital after he got frostbite.

This game was the 37th NFL Championship Game and the last one played before the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.
4. Super Bowl IV pitted the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL against the Kansas City Chiefs of the AFL. Right before the contest, the Minnesota Vikings were actually 12 point favorites to win the game.

Answer: True

Before Super Bowl IV it was believed that the NFL was far superior to the AFL and many people (including those setting the odds on the game) believed that the Vikings would dominate the game. Interestingly, the AFL had just won Super Bowl III the prior year seeming to indicate that the leagues were competitive.
5. The Kansas City Chiefs were the only team to score in the first half of Super Bowl IV. Which of their players accounted for 10 of their 16 points by making three field goals and an extra point?

Answer: Jan Stenerud

Jan Stenerud was born in Norway and he played in professional football from 1967 to 1985. During this time he made 373 field goals and he was the first player that solely played the position of kicker to make it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Chiefs' special teams had a stellar Super Bowl IV with Jan Stenerud connecting on three field goals and Jerrel Wilson averaging over 48 yards on four punts.
6. The Minnesota Vikings had a strong running game during the 1969 season but the Kansas City Chiefs' defense dominated Super Bowl IV. Which player, the Vikings' leading rusher during the regular season, did the Chiefs hold to just 15 yards on seven carries?

Answer: Dave Osborn

During the regular season Osborn ran for 643 yards and seven touchdowns. The size of the Chiefs' defensive line posed problems for the Minnesota Vikings offense throughout Super Bowl IV and Osborn was never able to break a big play.
7. The Kansas City Chiefs forced five turnovers in Super Bowl IV. Which cornerback and future Hall-of-Famer intercepted a pass on the final offensive play of the game for the Vikings?

Answer: Emmitt Thomas

Incredibly the Kansas City Chiefs defense in Super Bowl IV featured five players that would make it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In addition to the interception by Thomas, Willie Lanier and Johnny Robinson also had interceptions in Super Bowl IV.
8. The Kansas City Chiefs had a productive running game in Super Bowl IV. Which player, a former Heisman Trophy winner at USC, was their leading rusher with 39 yards and a touchdown?

Answer: Mike Garrett

In total the Chiefs had 151 yards rushing on 42 attempts. Their running attack was extremely balanced with four players rushing for more than 25 yards.
9. Similar to the first three Super Bowls, the winning quarterback was awarded the Super Bowl MVP award. Who was this player, who completed 12 of 17 passes for 142 yards with one touchdown and one interception?

Answer: Len Dawson

Dawson retired five seasons after Super Bowl IV. Len Dawson had a stellar, Hall of Fame career in professional football as he threw for over 28,000 yards and 239 touchdowns. Bart Starr was the MVP of the first two Super Bowls while Joe Namath was MVP of Super Bowl III. Joe Kapp was the quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV who had some success moving the ball but also threw two momentum killing interceptions in the game.
10. The Kansas City Chiefs seemed to have all of the right calls in Super Bowl IV. Who coached the Chiefs to a 23-7 victory in the game and in total coached the Kansas City Chiefs franchise for 15 seasons?

Answer: Hank Stram

Hank Stram made several tactical decisions during Super Bowl IV that proved to be successful. These included double-teaming Carl Eller and Jim Marshall, the defensive ends of the Vikings and running trap plays on offense. During the game Stram also became the first head coach to wear a microphone. Super Bowl IV was also the first Super Bowl to feature a halftime performance by a celebrity when Carol Channing did a Mardi Gras themed act.
