1. Why did the Australian and West Indian teams decide not to travel to Sri Lanka for their group A matches?

Answer: Both of these reasons

This gave Sri Lanka two wins before the competition had even begun. The result was considered to be a walkover, as the sides that were not in attendence forfeited the match.
2. What was seen as a problem with the team from the United Arab Emirates?

Answer: Only one of their team was born in the UAE

The team captain, Sultan Zarawani, was the only member of the team born in the UAE. The rest of the team were immigrants from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
3. The largest margin of victory by a side batting second was 9 wickets, which was against the UAE. Which team scored this victory?

Answer: Pakistan

Pakistan won the toss and put the UAE in to bat. They scored 109-9. Pakistan needed 18 overs to score 112, losing only Aamer Sohail as they did so.
4. The largest margin of victory by a team batting first was 169 runs, also against the UAE. Which team won this victory?

Answer: South Africa

Gary Kirsten scored 188* in the South African total of 321-2 from their fifty overs. In reply the UAE managed 152-8.

Answer: Sri Lanka won by default

The match was interrupted by annoyed spectators throwing things onto the pitch. Play was about to resume, but the crowd continued to throw things and so the game was called off. Sri Lanka was awarded the game by default - their run rate was higher than that of the Indians.

After being 15-4, Australia rallied and Law and Bevan helped them to reach a total of 207-8. In reply, the West Indies started well, being 164-2, but after 49.3 overs they were all out for 202. Shane Warne was the Man of the Match, taking 4-36. This was the first time the West Indies had lost a World Cup semi-final match.
7. In which Pakistani city was the World Cup final held?

Answer: Lahore

The two semi finals were held in India - in Calcutta and Mohali; Pakistan hosted the finals. Group A matches were held mainly in India, with some games scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka, while Group B matches were mainly played in Pakistan, with a couple of matches played in India.
8. How many centuries were scored during this World Cup?

Answer: 16

Gary Kirsten's 188* was the highest of the competition; Andrew Hudson, also a South African, had the second highest score of 161. Mark Waugh scored three centuries and Sachin Tendulkar and Aravinda de Silva scored two centuries each.
9. Which batsman scored the most runs in this tournament?

Answer: Sachin Tendulkar

Tendulkar scored 523 runs in seven matches at an average of 87.16. Waugh scored 484 runs, de Silva 448 and Kirsten 391. De Silva had the best batting average of the quartet - 89.60.
10. Who took the most wickets during this World Cup?

Answer: Anil Kumble

Kumble took 15 wickets in all, at an average of 18.73. His best bowling was 3-29. Waqar Younis took 13 wickets at an average of 19.46, with a best performance of 4-26. Strang and Warne each took 12 wickets. Strang's best bowling was 5-21 and Warne's was 4-34.
