The Fine Sport of Wrestling Trivia Quiz

This quiz is about wrestling, the real kind, not the fake (but entertaining) type you see on Pay-Per-View. If you don't or haven't wrestled in your life, I suggest not taking this quiz.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following will not get you two points in a match?

Answer: Escape

An escape is worth one point in wrestling. A take-down is always worth two points, as is a reversal. Near fall is a situation where a wrestler has his opponent on his back, but one or both shoulder blades are not touching the mat. Near fall "two" is where the losing wrestler flips back over to his stomach before the referee counts to three. If the referee makes it to three, it is called near fall "three".
2. Which of the following will not give you one point in a match?

Answer: Out of bounds (by opponent)

Out of bounds in wrestling only stops the clock, and the wrestlers restart in the middle, either in the neutral position, or the referee's position if there had been a take-down. An escape is getting back on your feet, uncontrolled, after an opponent takes you down. Stalling is a situation in which one of the wrestlers is just sitting there, i.e. a person who has been taken down and is on their stomach is doing nothing to get up or reverse the take-down. Penalty points is a situation such as a full-nelson (only a half-nelson is legal), or an illegal headlock.
3. Which of the following is not a type of "shot"?

Answer: Sprawl

A sprawl is jumping back after an opponent shoots, a maneuver used in hope to stretch your opponent out, therefore weakening him. A double leg is where a wrestler penetrates, and tries to take his opponent down by both legs. In a single leg, the shooter grabs his opponent's leg, and lifts it up in the air, limiting their balance. If the opponent stays up, the shooter turns his opponent's knee down, causing his body to twist in a downward position, or trips his other leg.

A fireman's carry is shooting a double leg, and throwing the 'victim' over your shoulder, and rolling him onto his back.
4. Which of the following moves is not a defensive maneuver?

Answer: Ankle pick

An ankle pick is another kind of shot. As I said in the answer segment of question three, a sprawl is a reaction to a shot. A whizzer is overhooking the arm that has your leg, after an opponent has shot a single-leg shot. A front headlock is sprawling, putting on hand on his same side elbow, and the other on his chin. Many combinations of moves can be done from here.
5. What is the definition of the situation (in high-school) where a wrestler wins because he is up by 15 points?

Answer: Tech. fall

There is no such thing as advantage fall. Fall is another term for a pin. Near fall is where a wrestler is on his on his back, but the shoulder blades are not on the mat. Tech. fall is 15 points advantage in high school. In college it is 10 points advantage.
6. Which of the following is not a pinning combination?

Answer: Collar tie

A collar tie is a stance where the wrestlers' arms are over-lapping each other, with each wrestler's hand on the neck of his opponent. A half-nelson is where the top wrestler has his arm under his opponent's arm-pit from the bottom and his hand on the bottom wrestler's neck.

A bar arm is the combination in which the wrestler on top sticks his arm under his opponent's arm-pit from the top, with the hand (many wrestlers turn this hand into a fist from here)in the middle of the back. A cradle is taking one of your opponent's legs with the opposite arm (i.e L Leg/R Arm, R Leg/L Arm), giving you leverage.
7. Brock Lesnar, the self-proclaimed "Next Big Thing", had a successful college wrestling career. He then became a professional wrestler. In 2004, he tried out for a team in the NFL, in the same state as his college. Which state was this?

Answer: Minnesota

Brock Lesnar was the heavyweight (285 lbs.) wrestler for Minnesota in the 1999 and 2000 wrestling years. He went 50-2 for Minnesota, with both losses coming at the hands of the heavyweights at rival Iowa. Minnesota won the Big Ten wrestling championship both years.

In 1999, Lesnar lost a match that would have propelled Minnesota into the finals, which were won by none other than Iowa. In 2000, Brock was the number one heavyweight in the country, defeating Wes Hand of Iowa (the only person Brock lost to that year) 3-2 in the championship match.
8. Who won the gold medal in wrestling at 185 lbs. (84 kg.) at the 2004 Athens Olympics?

Answer: Cael Sanderson

Sanderson was the only USA gold medallist in wrestling at the 2004 Olympics. In the quarterfinals, Cael beat Khodaei, of Iran, 6-5. He then beat Cuba's Romero 3-2 in the semi-finals, and finished his medal run off by beating Jae of Korea 3-1, giving him gold.
9. In 2004, the high school wrestling, what was the lightest varsity weight?

Answer: 103 pounds

112 pounds is the next weight up. 119 is after that, and 125 is after that. There were varsity weights in the '90s for a while, but guys (and girls) started getting bigger. 125 is also the lightest college weight.
10. Which of the following weight categories is the highest before heavyweight (285 pounds)?

Answer: 215 pounds

Of the incorrect answers, only 189 is a real weight.
