Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My younger brother and I come from Slovakia. We both started our NHL careers with Canadian teams, I with Ottawa and he with Montreal. I wore number 18 and he wore number 81. What is my first name?

Answer: Marian

At the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Marian Hossa played for the Atlanta Thrashers and his younger brother Marcel played for the New York Rangers. Marian was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 1997 and spent several successful seasons with them, but was sent to Atlanta just before the start of the 2005-06 season in a blockbuster deal that sent Dany Heatley to Ottawa. Marian also played for Team Slovakia at the both the 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics.
2. The Sedin twins have both played together for which NHL team in their career?

Answer: Vancouver Canucks

Daniel and Henrik Sedin, originally from Sweden, were both drafted by the Canucks in 1999. Daniel went 2nd overall and Henrik went 3rd overall. They also both played for the gold-medal winning Team Sweden in Torino in 2006.
3. I am a retired NHL player. I was drafted in 1994 in the 1st round (9th overall) by the New York Islanders. I retired in 1996. My older brother (the much more famous of the two of us) and I both have suffered from repeated concussions. What is my first name?

Answer: Brett

Brett Lindros is the younger brother of Eric Lindros. Eric had played in the NHL since 1992. He was drafted by the Quebec Nordiques (who later became the Colorado Avalanche) but never played a game for them before being traded to Philadelphia where he played until 2000.

He spent three years with the New York Rangers, and then moved to Toronto after the NHL lockout of 2004-05, and began the 2006-07 season with the Dallas Stars. Brett Lindros retired because he suffered too many concussions, and Eric was no stranger to injury either.
4. Which of the following families produced the most NHLers?

Answer: The Sutters

The Sutter parents had seven sons, and six of them played in the NHL. They are Brian, Darryl, Duane, Brent, and the twins, Rich and Ron. The Sutters played from the late 70s through to the early 90s (but not all at the same time). Rich and Ron played together in Philadelphia, and Duane and Brent played together for the Islanders.

They are also known for successful coaching and managerial careers.
5. What are the first names of the Lundqvists?

Answer: Henrik and Joel

Coming from Sweden, both were drafted in 2000 with Joel by the Dallas Stars and Henrik went to the New York Rangers. Joel, a forward, did not play in his first NHL game until December 2006, but Henrik had a spectacular rookie season in New York in 2005-06. He was a finalist for the Vezina trophy, awarded annually to the league's best goaltender.
6. What are the names of Wayne Gretzky's two younger brothers who were also in the NHL?

Answer: Brent and Keith

Brent was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992 and played a grand total of 13 games, including one against Wayne. Keith was drafted in 1985 by the Buffalo Sabres but never suited up for a game. He did play in the Ontario Hockey league, and went on to coach in other leagues as well. All three brothers were taught from a young age by their father, Walter.
7. Maurice Richard was "The Rocket". What was his brother Henri's nickname?

Answer: The Pocket Rocket

Henri was called, "The Pocket Rocket", because he was 15 years younger and much smaller than his older brother. Both played their entire careers for the Montreal Canadiens, Maurice from 1942 to 1960 and Henri from 1955 to 1975. Henri won 11 Stanley Cups, which set a record for any player in NHL history.
8. What is the last name of former NHL brothers Pavel and Valeri?

Answer: Bure

Valeri, the younger of the two, was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1992, and played for four other teams during his career, Dallas, St. Louis, Florida, and Calgary. Pavel was drafted in 1989 by Vancouver, and also played for the Panthers and the Rangers. He played for Team Russia at the 1998 and 2002 Olympics.
9. What are the first names of the Staal brothers?

Answer: Eric and Jordan

Eric and Jordan Staal are from Thunder Bay, Ontario. In 2003, Eric was selected 2nd overall by the Carolina Hurricanes, and Jordan was drafted 2nd overall in 2006 by the Pittsburgh Penguins. There are two more Staal brothers - Marc and Jared. Marc was drafted by the New York Rangers in 2005, 12th overall.
10. What is the name of Marcel Dionne's younger brother?

Answer: Gilbert

Gilbert is 19 years younger than brother Marcel. He was drafted in 1990 by Montreal, and won a Stanley Cup in 1993. He also played for the Cincinnatti Cyclones of the East Coast Hockey League, and was somewhat of a superstar there. In Cincinnati, his jersey number 21 was retired and December 2nd is known as Gilbert Dionne day.
