Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2008 Grated Coconut of the Calgary Stampede Rodeo was voted PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year for the fifth time. Prior to this only 1 other bronc had won the honor 5 times. What legendary blazed-face bronc with white sox am i speaking of?

Answer: Sippin' Velvet, B-J Rodeo Company

Owned by Bernis Johnson and the B-J Rodeo Co. of Cleburne Texas, this handsome bucker had a rodeo career that lasted almost 20 years. The bronc, also known at times as "Skoal Sippin' Velvet" was voted PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year in 1978, '83, '84, '86, and '87 as well as 5 times Bareback Horse of the National Finals Rodeo. Sippin' Velvet was retired in the arena at the 1994 National Finals Rodeo, and inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2000.
2. From the notorious bucking horse herd of Kesler Rodeo Co., what was the very rank and large red pinto mare that launched many bronc riders into the air, and was the PRCA Saddle Bronc of the Year in 2001, 2002, and 2003?

Answer: Painted Smile

At times this bronc seemed almost impossible to ride, often bucking off riders in only 2 or 3 jumps. In 2000, the big black mare threw world champion Dan Mortensen head first into the dirt at the National Finals so hard, it seemed he would not be able to get up. 3 years later, Mortensen rode Painted Smile to a 92 point score and the 2003 World Title. During the 2004 season, Painted Smile became somewhat a problem to get out of the bucking chute, and Kesler moved her over to the bareback riding event where she remained.
3. In a storied career, this terrible toro bucked off every PRCA bull riding champ of the 1980s. Who is this 1986 PRCA Bucking Bull of the Year that went unridden for almost 200 trips?

Answer: Mr. T, Burns Rodeo Co.

Big, mean, and spotted with a huge set of horns, Mr. T in addition to being the 1986 PRCA Bull of the Year, was also voted Bucking Bull of the National Finals in 1986 and 1989. He went unridden until 1989 when on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Cheyenne, veteran NFR bull rider Marty Stanert rode him for 93 points.

This should have been a happy historic moment for all there to see, sadly however, it was also the same day the World Champ Lane Frost was killed at Cheyenne.
4. Ridden only 8 times in 300 attempts, Oscar of Rodeo Stock Contractors Inc. was one of the most famous rodeo bulls ever. He was never voted Bucking Bull of the Year, but he did carry some cowboys to big scores. How many times was Oscar responsible for the record of highest marked bull ride?

Answer: 2

The record high marked bull ride of 96 points stood for 5 years until the 1978 Oakdale Calif. 4th of July rodeo, when bull rider Allan Jordan rode Oscar for 96 points tying the record. It was broken less then 4 months later when Don Gay rode the bull for 97 points and the new record at the Cow Palace. An interesting note, Allan Jordan worked for RSC Rodeo Inc, the company that owned Oscar, and over the years he competed on the bull 3 times.
5. There have been many stout arm jerking bareback horses over the years in Pro Rodeo. Ty Murray said of this bronc (tongue in cheek), "I made the best bull ride of my career on this horse." The bronc jerked him so hard the first jump out of the chute, that all he could do was drop his feet down into the belly and hold on till the whistle. What strong sorrel gelding was Ty commenting on?

Answer: Chester, Big Stone Rodeo Company

A magnificent bucker Chester didn't buck dirty he just went straight down the arena with tremendous power. A testament to the horses strenght, 90% of the cowboys who rode Chester to the whistle were not able to stay on him long enough to get to the pick up men. Most always when the ride was over and the rider would reach down with their free hand to double grab, the horses' power would send them head first to the dirt. World champ Will Lowe set an arena record of 91 points on Chester at the 2002 National Finals.
6. Of the 4 Ponies listed below, which somewhat small horse with big power has won both PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year and Saddle Bronc of the Year honors?

Answer: Spring Fling, Big Bend Rodeo Company

From looking at this little dark bay mare, you would never think that such a small horse could buck so hard under a bronc saddle as well as sticking some of the top bareback riders in the dirt. Unlike some horses who start strong then taper off, the book on Spring Fling is that she gets really rank from the 5 second mark onward.

In 1997, she was voted PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year. In 1999, her owners moved her over to the saddle bronc riding where she won Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year in 1999 and 2000, as well as Saddle Bronc of the Finals in '01 and '02.
7. What 2 great bucking bulls tied as PRCA Bucking Bull of the Year in 1975?

Answer: Tiger, Cervi Rodeo Co. and Black Six, Steiner Rodeo Co.

PRCA Bucking Bull of the Year in 1975 was a repeat for Tiger as the horned brindle bull won the honor in 1974 also. In 1976, Black Six was successfully ridden in Sikeston Missouri by National Finals veteran bull rider Don Graham. The first person to congratulate Graham after the ride was the bull's owner Bobby Steiner.
8. Saying this horses' name sent a chill through the ranks of professional bareback riders for years. But as wicked at bucking as this bronc was, it never won PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year. What infamous horse is this?

Answer: Three Bars, Reg Kesler Rodeo

Probably the most dreaded bareback horse in PRCA history, the great mare was voted top bareback horse of the National Finals Rodeo 3 times, and inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2004. 5-time PRCA World Champion bareback rider Bruce Ford said of Three Bars, "This horse was probably the rankest horse I was ever on." The other 3 choices were all rank broncs that won Bucking Horse of the Year titles, but none of them generated the awe that Three Bars did.
9. Of the animal athletes listed, choose the outstanding paint saddle bronc who always left the chute with a big rear out, and puts on a great show at the National Finals Rodeo leading to big scores for riders.

Answer: Rio Bravo, Cervi Championship Rodeo Company

Rio Bravo is almost as much fun to watch as Painted Smile. Billy Etbauers' rides on Rio are some of the best. The bronc always leaves high and hard and just keeps getting higher across the arena. The big gelding from the Cervi Company has carried Dan Mortenson, Bud Longbrake, and the aforementioned Billy Etbauer all to rides of 90 points or above.
10. Throughout rodeo history, some bulls have been honored as PRCA Bucking Bull of the Year twice by the top bull riders. Who was the first bull ever to be voted PRCA Bucking Bull of the Year three times?

Answer: Pacific Bell, Western Rodeos Inc.

And a bad one he was. A perfect poster child for what a rodeo bull should be, Pacific Bell was a ring eye brindle with a hump, big horns and a bad attitude. When explaining how he came to name the bull Pacific Bell, owner Dan Russell chuckled, "because with those big horns he likes to reach out and touch the cowboys." Not impossible to ride but very rank, Pacific Bell was only ridden 5 times enroute to winning PRCA Bull of the Year honors in '88, '89 and '90.

He was also voted Bucking Bull of the National Finals Rodeo in 1987.
