Answer: 1977

Under the helm of Roy Hartsfield, the Blue Jays finished seventh out of seven teams in the American League East Division in 1977. It was not uncommon for a new team to struggle with rosters, personnel, egos, etc. Unfortunately, they finished in last place in their division for their first five seasons.

Cox was in his fourth season with the Blue Jays in 1985. It was Bobby's fifth season at the helm with Toronto after managing the Atlanta Braves for five seasons. Although making the playoffs in 1985, the Blue Jays would lose the ALCS to the Royals, who would go on to win the World Series over the Cardinals.
3. Who was the first Blue Jay player to win an American League batting title?

Answer: John Olerud

The first baseman played most of his 17-season career with the Blue Jays. In 1993, John batted .363 along with 200 hits. He finished third in the balloting for the MVP behind winner Frank Thomas of the White Sox, and teammate Paul Molitor.

Toronto had Cito Gaston holding the reins of the club in 1992. The Blue Jays were led in the World Series by the arms of Jimmy Key and Duane Ward who won two games each, then Pat Borders who batted .450 and won the series MVP Award.

Exhibition Stdaium originally opened up in 1879. It was re-opened in 1959 for other sports venues, but not used by the Blue Jays until 1977. The Blue Jays' last game there was in the 1989 season when they moved into the Skydome. Exhibition Park was demolished 10 years later.
6. The pitching Cy Young Award began in 1956. Which Toronto pitcher was the team's first to win the award?

Answer: Pat Hentgen

Hentgen won in 1996 by going 20-10 along with 177 strikeouts. He won the award over Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera, both of the Yankees. The Blue Jays still finished 18 games back of the Yankees.
7. Somebody had to be the first Blue Jay 20-game winner. Which pitcher was it?

Answer: Jack Morris

Hentgen went 20-10 in 1996, Clemens 20-6 in 1998, and David Wells 20-8 in 2000. However, it was Morris who went 21-6 in 1992 to be the first Toronto 20-game winner. He still finished fifth in the Cy Young voting in the season.
8. Who was the first player in a Blue Jays uniform to steal 50 bases in a season?

Answer: Damaso Garcia

The others never played for the Blue Jays. Garcia stole 54 bases in 1982. It was his third season with the Blue Jays after spending two seasons prior with the Yankees. The second baseman's 54 thefts was his career high.

Gaston had the reins of the team for eight seasons from 1990-1997. After being replaced by Tim Johnson in 1998, and seeing numerous other managers over many seasons, Cito came back at the helm in 2009. The Blue Jays finished fourth in the AL East with a 75-87 record in 2009.
10. Who was the first season AL MVP Award winner for the Blue Jays?

Answer: George Bell

The left fielder won the award in 1987. George hit 47 home runs while batting .308. He won the award over Alan Trammell of the Tigers and Kirby Puckett of the Twins. Both were career highs for Bell, who retired in 1993.
