UNLV became a school in 1957, and adopted its basketball program in 1958. Back the it was actually called Southern Division of the University of Nevada.

Beauregard was the original mascot, but some of the athletes at UNLV thought it was not appropriate to the black athletes, so they changed the name to Hey Reb in the early 1970s.
