Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In his third Olympics, Apolo Anton Ohno won three more medals. What Pacific Northwest city did the Olympic champion call home?

Answer: Seattle, Washington

Ohno said that competing in Vancouver felt like coming home for him, because he often trained there in his youth. Many of his supporters from Seattle were evident in the crowd at his races as well.
Ohno's skates from the 2002 Olympic Games were placed on display at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. He competed on "Dancing with the Stars" and won - he and his partner Julianne Hough received the first perfect score in the history of the show.

In Vancouver, Apolo Ohno won a silver medal in the 1500 meters on February 13. This tied him with Bonnie Blair as the US athlete with the most medals in the Winter Olympics. He passed her with a bronze in the 1000 meters, and another bronze in the 1500m relay. Including the 2010 Olympics, Ohno has two gold, two silver, and four bronze medals in Short Track.
2. Shani Davis made history in 2006 as the first African-American athlete to win a gold medal in the Winter Olympics. When TV show host Stephen Colbert offered to help raise money for the speed skating team, what did Davis call him?

Answer: A Jerk

When Dutch bank DSB dropped out as a sponsor of the speed skating team, Colbert rallied fans of his show, known as the "Colbert Nation", to make up the short fall so Americans could compete in Vancouver.
Colbert attended the Vancouver Olympics and cheered on the speed skating team, even taping his show at the games. Colbert even brought a large moose along. He had nicknamed it Ebersol (after NBC Sports executive producer Dick Ebersol), but Ebersol renamed the moose Colbert. On Thursday February 25, Davis apologized to Colbert during an interview on "The Colbert Report".
Davis won gold at 1000 meters in every world championship between 2004 and 2009. Davis is 6 foot, 2 inches, quite tall for a speed skater. He is a native of Chicago, Illinois.

In Vancouver, Davis made history again as the first skater to win consecutive golds in the 1000 meter race. Davis also won a silver at 1500 meters, being edged out by Mark Tuitert of the Netherlands. Davis finished 12th in the 5000 meters race and dropped out of the 500 meters.
3. On February 6, 2009, Erin Hamlin stunned the luging world when she won the FL World Championships at Lake Placid, New York. She broke a 99-race winning streak held by what country?

Answer: Germany

Hamlin's win marked the first time a German woman had lost an international luging competition since 1997. The American beat out German Natalie Geisenberger by 0.187 seconds.

In Vancouver, Hamlin finished 16th with a combined time of 2:49.108. The Germans were once again back in form, taking Gold (Tajana Hufner) and Bronze (Geisenberger).
4. During her time in college, hockey forward Julie Chu set an NCAA scoring record at which Ivy League school?

Answer: Harvard

Chu graduated with honors with a psychology degree from Harvard in 2007. During her years at Harvard, she scored 284 points. The Olympics in Vancouver will be her third. She won a silver in Salt Lake City and a bronze in Turin. In 2007, Chu won the Patty Kazmaier award, the ice hockey equivalent of the Heisman Trophy.

In Vancouver, Chu added another silver medal to her trophy case. The US women lost to the Canadians 2-0 in the Gold Medal match. The United States women outscored their opponents 40-2 in getting to the final. Standouts in Vancouver included Jenny Potter, who had two hat tricks, and goalie Jessie Vetter, who had a save rate of 95.7 percent (68 saves).
5. A returnee to the 2010 Olympics was Shaun White, star of the half-pipe in Turino. White, who had set numerous records in snowboarding, including being the first to perform several impossible moves, is known by what nickname?

Answer: The Flying Tomato

On top of his sporting achievements, White also received a "Golden God Award" from "Revolver" magazine naming him "Most Metal Athlete". Shortly before the Vancouver games, White announced that he had grown tired of the tomato nickname and wished to be known as Shaun "Snow" White.

In Vancouver, White may just earn the title of "Snow White". He won the gold medal in the half-pipe (for the second time) in grand style. After winning on his first run alone, he did the second run for fun and was even more impressive. He did just about everything short of pulling out an accordian in mid-air.
6. Hannah Teter, gold medal-winning snowboarder in Turin, returned to Vancouver. Her charity, Hannah's Gold, raised money through selling what Vermont product?

Answer: Maple syrup

Hannah's Gold sells maple syrup to raise money for the village of Kirindon, Kenya. The charity works with World Vision, the Christian relief NGO, to provide clean water to villages in Africa.
In 2009, Ben and Jerry's ice cream created a new flavor: Hannah Teter's Maple Blondie. A portion of the proceeds benefit Teter's charity. The snowboarder is a native of Belmont, Vermont.
Some controversy centered around Teter when she joined several of her Olympic colleagues and posed for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.

In Vancouver, Hannah Teter took silver in the women's half-pipe on February 18, losing narrowly to Australian Torah Bright. She scored a 45.4 in qualification, but was unable to match that in the final, scoring 42.4 to Bright's 45.0.
7. The United States had two new names in figure skating, Rachael Flatt and Mirai Nagasu. They finished first and second in the 2010 US championships to represent the US in Vancouver. What state did both of these young women come from?

Answer: California

Flatt is a native of Del Mar, and Nagasu is a native of Arcadia. Nagasu was the 2008 National Champion, and one of the youngest skaters ever to hold the title. Mirai means future in Japanese. Flatt trains in Colorado Springs, and is a senior at Cheyenne Mountain High School.

In Vancouver, Nagasu finished 4th, with a personal best of 190.15, skating to "Carmen". Flatt finished 7th, with a personal best of 182.49, skating to Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini".
8. What Midwestern state produced every member of the United States men's curling team at the 2010 Olympics?

Answer: Minnesota

John Shuster (Skip), Jeff Isaacson (Second) and Chris Plys (Alternate) are all from Duluth. Lead John Benton is from Saint Michael, and Third Jason Smith is from Chisholm. Coach Phil Drobnick is from Eveleth.
The members of the women's team were from Wisconsin and Minnesota.

In Vancouver, The US curlers didn't fare all that well, winning only 2 games and losing 7. They defeated France 4-3 and Sweden 8-7.
9. In 2008, Lindsey Vonn and Bode Miller each won the World Cup skiing title. How many years had it been since both titles had been held by two Americans?

Answer: 25 years

The previous time was 1983, when Tamara McKinney and Phil Mahre were world champions. Vonn won back-to-back in the World Cup downhill in 2008 and 2009. When the 2010 season began, she trailed only Miller as the winningest skier in US history. Both Vonn and Miller were on the 2010 Alpine Skiing team.

In Vancouver, Lindsey Vonn became the first US woman to take the gold in the downhill race. She beat out fellow American Julia Mancuso. Vonn also won a bronze in the Super-G. The rest of her Olympics weren't so great. She crashed in both the Super Combined and Giant Slalom, and missed a gate in Slalom. In her defense, she was skiing with a broken finger.
Vancouver was Bode Miller's fourth Olympics. He won two silvers in Salt Lake City.

In Vancouver, he won a gold (Combined), a silver (Super-G) and a bronze (Downhill). In the Downhill, Miller was only .09 seconds behind winner Didier Defago of Switzerland. Miller did not finished in the Slalom. He matched Norwegian legend Kjetil Andre Aamodt, becoming the second man to win medals in four Alpine disciplines.
10. Shauna Rohbock, silver medal-winning bobsledder in Torino, was back in Vancouver. What summer sport did Rohbock participate in to build up those leg muscles?

Answer: Soccer

Rohbock was a star soccer player at Brigham Young University, scoring 95 goals during her career there. She played professionally for the San Diego Spirit in 2003. Her partner in Turin was Valerie Fleming.

In Vancouver, Shauna Rohbock and partner Michelle Rzepka finished sixth this time around, with a time of 3:34.06, 1.78 seconds behind winners Kallie Humphries and Heather Moyse of Canada. Canada took gold and silver in Women's Bobsled, and the United States took bronze.
