1. Who was the first player to miss a penalty kick at the world cup?

Answer: Valdemar de Brito (Brazil, 1934 in Italy)

Valdemar de Brito will remain in football history for two things: he was the first player to ever miss a penalty at the World Cup (in the game lost against Spain 1-3) and he was the one who discovered and mentored the great Pele.

The semi-fianl match ended 3-3 aet (it was 1-1 at full time), West Germany won the penalty shootout lottery 5-4; the French player Alain Giresse being the first to shoot and score a penalty in a shoot-out at the World Cup. The match is also remembered for Harald Schumacher's horrendous foul against French defender Battiston, one of the most shocking fouls in the history of football.

Bert Patenaude (USA) scored his hat-trick on 17th July in a first round game against Paraguay (the march was won 3-0 by the USA). He contributed to USA's best World Cup placement in history (losing semi-finalists).

Lucien Laurent was a prisoner of war for three years during World War II. He survived the German POW camps and was the only remaining member of the 1930 team to witness France's first World Cup win, in 1998, 68 years later.
