Brazil beat Italy 4-1 in this unforgetable final in Mexico. The Brazilians also got Jules Rimet trophy to themselves after three World Cup victories. The goals were scored by: 1-0 Pele, 1-1 Boninsegna, 2-1 Gerson, 3-1 Jairzinho, 4-1 Carlos Alberto.

The first time in World Cup history there were six players that shared the Golden Boot, as the best goal scorers in the tournament. Carrincha (Brasil), Vavá (Brasil), L. Sánchez (Chile), Albert (Hungary), W. Iwanow (USSR), Jerkovic (Yugoslavia), all scored four goals.

The goal was scored by Lato, who then also won the Golden Boot. 1982 Poland also came third after beating France 3-2 in the 3rd place play-off. 1966 Poland did not participate the tournament, and in 1978 in second phase Argentina and Brazil were ahead of Poland.

West Germany lost to England 4-2 after extra time. The match is remembered by all for the controversial goal scored by Geoff Hurst. In 1986, West Germany also scored two goals in the final, but lost already on full time to Argentina 2-3. In 1982, West Germany lost to Italy 1-3, and in 1962 they never reached the final.
