The Allegheny's were formed in 1882, and were called that until the 1891 season, when they changed their name to the Pirates. The Alleghenys were a part of the American Association in baseball until 1886, when the franchise became a part of the National League in 1887.

They had 5 managers in 1884 before Horace Phillips took the reins of the team, and transitioned them into the Pirates in 1891. The Allegheny's best record was 80-57 in 1886.
2. Who was the first Pirate manager to win over 1,000 games?

Answer: Fred Clarke

Murtaugh won 1,115 games in a Pirate uniform (1957-1976), but it was Fred Clarke who led the team to 1,422 wins from 1900-1915. He led the team to 3 National League titles, and a World Series in 1909 by defeating the Detroit Tigers 4 games to 3.
3. Who was the first Pirate to hit 50 home runs in a season?

Answer: Ralph Kiner

Kiner hit 51 four-baggers in 1947. He topped that in 1949 when he hit 54. The great Wilbur Stargell hit 48 home runs in 1971.

Exposition Park found the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1891. The franchise played at Recreation Field as the Allegheny's the previous year. The Pirates continued to play at Exposition until 1909, where they were housed by Forbes Field. They would please their fans for 61 years before playing in Three Rivers Stadium.

At Exposition Park, they won three consecutive National League Championships 1901-02-03.

Wagner is the only one listed who played in a Pirate uniform. He was the first Pirate to .300 by hitting .381 in 1900. Wagner retired with a lifetime batting average of .327, along 3,415 career hits.

Answer: Roberto Clemente

Clemente ended his career with exactly 3,000 hits in a Pirate uniform. Although he had already played for 18 seasons, his career was cut short when he was killed in a humanitarian venture to the Carribean.
