The Allegheny's were formed in 1882, and were called that until the 1891 season, when they changed their name to the Pirates. The Alleghenys were a part of the American Association in baseball until 1886, when the franchise became a part of the National League in 1887.

They had 5 managers in 1884 before Horace Phillips took the reins of the team, and transitioned them into the Pirates in 1891. The Allegheny's best record was 80-57 in 1886.

Murtaugh won 1,115 games in a Pirate uniform (1957-1976), but it was Fred Clarke who led the team to 1,422 wins from 1900-1915. He led the team to 3 National League titles, and a World Series in 1909 by defeating the Detroit Tigers 4 games to 3.

Kiner hit 51 four-baggers in 1947. He topped that in 1949 when he hit 54. The great Wilbur Stargell hit 48 home runs in 1971.

Wilver Dornel "Pops" Stargell, was everyone's Pop in Pittsburgh. He played from 1962-1982, all in a Pirates' uniform. He compiled a career total of 475 home runs for the Pittsburgh fans, along with the 1979 NLCS, National League, and World Series MVP.

Exposition Park found the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1891. The franchise played at Recreation Field as the Allegheny's the previous year. The Pirates continued to play at Exposition until 1909, where they were housed by Forbes Field. They would please their fans for 61 years before playing in Three Rivers Stadium.

At Exposition Park, they won three consecutive National League Championships 1901-02-03.

Clendenon holds many season records for the Pirates for striking out. He struck out 163 times in 1968, breaking his own record of striking out 142 times in 1966, which again broke his own record of 128 in 1965. Stargell's tops was 129 in 1972.

Killen in a Pirate uniform, won 36 games in 1893. Ed Morris set a franchise record by winning 41 games in 1886 as an Allegheny. Jack Chesbro's high season was 28 games in 1902.

Wagner is the only one listed who played in a Pirate uniform. He was the first Pirate to .300 by hitting .381 in 1900. Wagner retired with a lifetime batting average of .327, along 3,415 career hits.

Clemente ended his career with exactly 3,000 hits in a Pirate uniform. Although he had already played for 18 seasons, his career was cut short when he was killed in a humanitarian venture to the Carribean.
