1. The New York Mets began their franchise in 1962. Who was their inaugural manager who couldn't win 54 games within their first three seasons?

Answer: Casey Stengel

After much success with the New York Yankees from 1949-1960, along with 10 World Series appearances, Casey took on a lot of heat in 1962. He was replaced before the end of the 1965 season with the Mets. This was his last managing assignment. In the Mets' first seven seasons, they could not finish better than 9th place of 10 teams.

In 1969, it was worst to first, as the Amazing Mets won the World Series against the Orioles, four games to one. Casey Stengel, who played for 14 seasons, then managed for 25 seasons, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1966. Stengel died in 1975.

The only World Series' that Billy Martin saw, was with the Yankees from 1976-1978. In the two latter seasons, the Yankees won the World Series. Martin died on Christmas Day, 1989, a year after his final firing.
3. In 1961, the Los Angeles Angels joined Major League baseball. After many seasons, and in the middle of their ninth season, which manager was finally fired?

Answer: Bill Rigney

The others listed never managed anywhere near 1961, and never managed the Angels. Rigney began managing the Angels' franchise after taking the Giants from New York to San Francisco for five seasons. His Giants' best finish was third. Rigney was replaced in mid-season 1969, by Lefty Phillips. Under Phillips, the Angels finished third in the AL West.
4. Who managed the Seattle Pilots in their only year of existence in 1969, then was fired?

Answer: Joe Schultz

The others never managed a Major League team. Schultz was in his first season as a manager in the Majors in 1969. His Pilots finished the season with a 64-98 record. He was fired after the season, and the team moved to Milwaukee to become the Brewers.

The Detroit Tigers hired him in 1973 to attempt to turn their ballclub around. Schultz lasted only 28 games and was fired again. He never managed again.
5. With the Padres, Red Sox, Rangers, and Cubs, this manager could not produce even a World Series appearance. He later settled for a coaching job with the New York Yankees under manager Joe Torre. Who was he?

Answer: Don Zimmer

The others listed never managed in their great baseball careers. Don Zimmer tried his luck as a manager in 1972 with the Padres, but lasted only two seasons. In 1976, he managed the Red Sox, but could not muster a better than second place finish. After being fired from the Red Sox, he spent two years with the Texas Rangers.

He then managed the Chicago Cubs from 1988-1991, and still couldn't win a league pennant.

The others listed, died long before the Texas Rangers came into existence. Williams, who had always been a perfectionist, had the Rangers in shambles with personality conflicts. After the team began their new start in Texas, they finished the season with a dismal 54-100 record in 1972.

There is still controversy over whether Williams was fired or quit. He never managed again. This great Red Sox player was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1966. Williams died in died in 2002.

The team hired Bob Shawkey for the 1930 season, but the team finished with a 86-68 third place finish, behind the winning Athletics and second place Senators.

The Yankees certainly were not used to this finish, as they had gone to the World Series six of their last nine years. The Yankees then hired manager Joe McCarthy, who led the team for the following 16 seasons. McCarthy took the Yankees to the World Series in eight of his 16 seasons.
10. Although in his first managerial season, and he took the Yankees to the World Series in 1964, he was fired. Who was this manager, who later went to manage the New York Mets?

Answer: Yogi Berra

The others never managed. As with Ted Williams' final managerial season, there was much controversy whether Yogi was fired or quit. After almost 40 years of negativity, both Yogi and George made up and put their pasts behind them. Berra took the Mets to the World Series in 1973, but was defeated by the Oakland Athletics, under Dick Williams, four games to three.
