Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this first episode of the series, it was revealed that Nick Clark suffered from which issue?

Answer: Drug addiction

The series literally opened with Nick being one of the first witnesses to the "infection". He'd spent the night doing drugs with his friends, and found one of them (Gloria) eating someone. She'd likely died of an overdose and then turned sometime in the night. Nick was so freaked out he ran from the building as fast as he could and was hit by a car.

Nick was played by Frank Dillane. Frank also played Tom Riddle in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince". Frank's father is Stephen Dillane, who may be better known as Stannis Baratheon on "Game of Thrones". Lexi Johnson played the show's first zombie, Gloria.
2. What was the name of Travis' son?

Answer: Chris

Travis Manawa had moved in with his girlfriend, Nick's mom, Madison Clark. It was Travis' weekend to have his son Chris, but Chris did not want to spend time with his father. Travis' ex-wife Liza told her son he did not have a say in it. In the end, Travis allowed Chris to skip it.

Lorenzo James Henrie played Chris Manawa.
3. Where did Madison and Travis work?

Answer: High school

Maddie was a counselor and Travis an English teacher at Paul R. Williams High School. One the first day, Travis stayed at the hospital with Nick, and Maddie went into school with her daughter Alicia. When she arrived, Principal Costa told her a lot of kids were out of school that day. She said she'd had her flu shot, so she was okay, and that someone named Stacy would teach Travis' classes.

Scott Lawrence played Art Costa.
4. "No one's going to college, no one's doing anything they think they are... Can I get my knife back please?" Who said this to Madison?

Answer: Tobias

Madison took a small kitchen knife off of Tobias at school. She warned him he could be sent home for having it. He told her not to do that, as it was "safer in numbers". She said to be careful, as he was doing so well, even well enough to go to college. That's when he spoke the quoted dialogue. Tobias already knew what was happening. Madison didn't believe him despite reports coming from "five states".

Lincoln A. Castellanos played Tobias.
5. After hearing Nick's story, Travis went back to the church to investigate it.

Answer: True

Nick told Travis exactly what he saw. He also explained how Gloria had been with him when he got the drugs and they'd done them together. Travis thought it had been the effect of the drugs, but Nick said he wasn't sure of that, as heroin had never done that to him. And, if it hadn't been the drugs, Nick told Travis that meant he was insane. So, Travis went back to the location and saw evidence of what Nick had experienced. Later, Travis and Maddie went there together.

New Zealander Cliff Curtis played Travis.
6. Who told Travis, "it's in the genes"?

Answer: Madison

They were exploring the old church together, and Travis told Maddie it was not her fault that Nick was an addict. That's when she said "it's in the genes", leading viewers to the possibility she or someone in her family had been a user as well. Travis reminded her nothing like that had happened with Alicia, so Maddie said "well, I'm batting 500".

Maddie has a southern accent.. maybe she's from Georgia (hints/foreshadow)?
7. Alicia and her artist boyfriend Matt were supposed to meet at the beach. Did that ever happen?

Answer: No

She arrived and waited for him. When he was a no show, she texted him, but he never responded. The next day, she still hadn't heard from him at all.

Maestro Harrell played Matt. Australian actress Alycia Debnam-Carey played Alicia Clark. She was also in the CW series "The 100".
8. Near the end of the episode, who did Nick meet at a restaurant?

Answer: Calvin, his drug dealer

Travis and Maddie had already talked to Calvin, who claimed to have not seen Nick in a long time. Nick told Calvin he wanted to know what Calvin had given him, drug wise. Calvin got mad about the accusation, and Nick explained what happened at the church. The conversation, and the visit from Maddie, had Calvin paranoid. So, he took Nick somewhere to kill him. He was unsuccessful at that task.

Keith Powers played Calvin.
9. Calvin died.

Answer: True

Calvin drove Nick to the river (flow through canal) to shoot him, and Nick fought back. The gun fired during the struggle, fatally wounding Calvin. Calvin would not stay dead, and Nick called for help.

Los Angeles is the setting for several TV shows. While watching this show and "Ray Donovan", I found many similarities to "GTA 5", the video game. The game is set in Los Santos, a euphemism for Los Angeles. The attention to detail by Rockstar games has been enjoyable to see.
10. At the end of this episode, who was *not* at the river canal to witness someone who'd "turned" after death?

Answer: Liza

After Calvin's death, Nick called Travis for help. He brought Maddie with him, though Nick had asked him not to do so. He told them what happened with Calvin, but when they went to the car, Calvin's body was gone. Nick panicked, thinking he had lost his mind. But, just when you think you're definitely crazy, a reanimated corpse saves the day.

They all got into Travis' truck to leave the canal, and there was Calvin, plodding toward them as they backed up. Nick warned them not to get out and approach, but they did it anyway. Calvin attacked them, and they fought him off. Nick then ran him down with the truck and saved his mom and Travis.
