Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Over dinner, Sub-Commander T'Pol reveals that she is about to undergo the pon farr, and asks Captain Archer and Commander Tucker if they have been experiencing sexual tension.

Answer: False

Pon farr does enter the conversation, but only because T'Pol explains that she, herself, is not feeling any sexual tension. She asked the question because she had observed that the crew's efficiency was down 3%, and that it had been some time since the crew had had any shore leave.

In her usual matter-of-fact way, T'Pol broaches the subject of human sexuality without any discomfort. Or rather, without any discomfort on her part. Trip and the captain both seem a little taken aback by her question and squirm a bit, but they are both quick to agree with T'Pol's suggestion that the crew is overdue for some leave time, and that Risa would be the perfect place for shore leave.

Scott Bakula portrayed Captain Jonathan Archer, while Connor Trinneer was Commander Charles Tucker III and Jolene Blalock played Sub-Commander T'Pol.
2. Travel plans to Risa are cancelled when the Enterprise is ordered to pick up Vulcan Ambassador V'Lar from the planet Mazar. Which crew member gives up their quarters to house the ambassador?

Answer: Ensign Sato

Hoshi is quite willing to give up her cabin for the ambassador, but T'Pol doesn't make it too easy on her. Expecting that Ambassador V'Lar would want isolation, T'Pol requires the room to be as spartan as possible, so that there would be no distraction from meditating.

Linda Park played the part of Ensign Hoshi Sato, and Ambassador V'Lar was portrayed by Fionnula Flanagan.
3. In advance of the ambassador's arrival, Sub-Commander T'Pol has some very specific restrictions for the crew for interacting with Ambassador V'Lar. Which of these is NOT one of her rules?

Answer: Do not look the ambassador in the eyes.

With the restrictions on interacting with the ambassador and the expectations set around her temporary quarters, T'Pol is operating on assumptions that prove quite quickly to be unfounded. When Ambassador V'Lar arrives, she proves to be quite affable, even offering her hand to the senior officers, and later attempting some humour over dinner.

When presented her quarters, she asks to speak with the owner. T'Pol assumes it is because of the human odour, but V'Lar says that she wishes to thank Hoshi for the gesture and apologize for the inconvenience.
4. According to the official who greets them upon arrival at Mazar, why is Ambassador V'Lar being expelled from her post?

Answer: Abuse of her position and criminal misconduct

Things happen very quickly upon arrival to Mazar, and there is a shuttle already bringing the ambassador to the Enterprise. No further explanation or evidence is given to support the accusations, and Ambassador V'Lar also refuses to divulge any details.

Overall, the situation does not sit well with Captain Archer, and he feels that, once again, the Vulcan High Command are treating the humans as unworthy and unequal members of their 'alliance'.

T'Pol explains to Archer that she once traveled a great distance to see the ambassador speak at a conference on Vulcan, and challenged some of her ideas. She gave credit to V'Lar for being her inspiration to join the Science Council. T'Pol's disappointment in Ambassador V'Lar lies in the fact that she is not attempting to defend herself against the Mazarite charges, which T'Pol believes she would do if she were innocent.

The Mazarite official was played by J. Michael Flynn.
5. What is the name of the Vulcan ship that the Enterprise must rendezvous with to deliver Ambassador V'Lar?

Answer: Sh'Raan

The Sh'Raan is a Suurok-class Vulcan combat cruiser with a top speed of warp 7. It has a long, cylindrical hull and a unique, ring-shaped warp drive.

The captain of the Sh'Raan (seen at the end of the episode) was played by Dennis Howard.
6. While en route to their rendezvous, the Enterprise is overtaken by a Mazarite ship. Their Captain seems cordial, and asks for them to deliver Ambassador V'Lar to them for further questioning. When Captain Archer (politely) refuses, citing a need to consult with his superiors, how do the Mazarites respond? Negotiated the territorial accords between Vulcan and Andoria

Answer: They fire on the Enterprise.

The polite-yet-tense exchange between the two captains makes it clear that there is something untoward going on, and when Ensign Sato attempts to contact Starfleet Command, she finds the frequencies being jammed by the Mazarites.

The Mazarite ship fires at them, and Lieutenant Reed fires back, but the spatial torpedoes have little effect. Archer orders the Enterprise to drop to impulse, and this time when Lt. Reed fires using phase cannons, they are able to disable their pursuers and return to warp.

Lieutenant Malcolm Reed was played by Dominic Keating, while the Mazarite ship's captain is portrayed by John Rubinstein.
7. Captain Archer demands to know the whole story from Ambassador V'Lar, but when she still hedges, the Captain says he cannot risk his ship and crew without being told the truth and must return her to Mazar. Commander Tucker pleads with the captain to change his mind and continue on to the rendezvous, rather than give in to the Mazarite bully tactics.

Answer: False

It is actually Sub-Commander T'Pol who, after speaking with V'Lar, comes to the captain to ask him to reconsider his decision. Even though V'Lar has still not revealed everything, T'Pol trusts her to the point that she pleads to the captain on V'Lar's behalf, stating that she has never asked anything of him until now.

Moved by T'Pol's conviction and his trust in her gained through experience, Captain Archer agrees to do as asked.
8. This time, three Mazarite ships pursue the Enterprise. What warp factor does the Enterprise reach for the first time in their effort to outrun the Mazarites?

Answer: Warp 5

Although classified as a 'Warp 5' ship, that benchmark was really only theoretical up to this point, having only been achieved through computer simulations.

As the Enterprise keeps trying to stay ahead of the Mazarites, Ambassador V'Lar finally reveals the true nature of the situation - that she has gathered evidence against a criminal organization that has infiltrated all levels of Mazarite government. The ships chasing them intend to kill her to prevent her from testifying against them.

Unfortunately, even though Commander Tucker manages to eke out enough power to break the Warp 5 threshold, it is not enough to outrun their pursuers, who also strain their ships' capacities in the process. Suffice it to say, the Mazarites close to within firing range, and are able to force the Enterprise to drop out of warp.
9. With the Enterprise 'dead in the water', Captain Archer agrees to a Mazarite boarding party, but begins stalling tactics. What is he waiting for?

Answer: The Vulcans to come to them

Ambassador V'Lar gives Ensign Sato a diplomatic frequency on a low subspace band that can contact the Vulcans. Up until then, Mazarite jamming had prevented the Enterprise from letting the Vulcans know of their predicament.

With a message (hopefully) bringing the Vulcan combat cruiser to them, the Captain strings the Mazarites along by claiming that their latest barrage injured the ambassador. When they come to Sickbay, Dr. Phlox insists that she cannot be removed from the dermal regenerator. The Mazarites proceed to fire repeatedly into the machine, supposedly killing V'Lar.

Just then, the Sh'Raan arrives, and V'Lar steps into Sickbay, unharmed. Outwitted and outgunned, the Mazarites surrender.
10. How many of the three Mazarite ships are destroyed at the end of the episode?

Answer: None

The threat of their superior weapons is enough to make the Mazarite criminals back down, and the Vulcans elect to allow the Mazarites to depart unscathed. As usual, they don't bother telling the humans the reasoning behind their decision

Ambassador V'Lar, however, takes the time to acknowledge the bond between Archer and T'Pol, and recognizes it as good for the future of their two species.
