Answer: He was dead.

Coach ended up helping the man instead. He did so without realizing what the man was saying. The man's son was gay and that was the issue he was having, but Coach thought the problem was that the man was dating someone black. But then Coach finally realized that the son was gay and told him to kick the boy out and stop loving him.

The man took his advice to mean, "If I can't accept him for who he is, I'll lose him."
8. What was the name of Sam's ex-wife?

Answer: Debra

Debra was played by Donna McKechnie. In 1976, McKechnie won a Tony Award for her performance of Broadway's "A Chorus Line".
9. Sam said his life wasn't fun anymore. Who did he blame for that?

Answer: Diane

He said before he met Diane he dated women who weren't very smart but they were fun. But now all he could do was think about how dumb the women he dates are.
10. Diane told Sam he wouldn't be able to date a really intelligent woman because they'd see past his bull a mile away. Did Diane see past it?

Answer: No

Sam went on this whole thing about how he had never seen the color of Diane's eyes since he once saw a beautiful sunset. When she was in a dazed state he said to her, "Wouldn't work, huh?" She was still so mesmerized by it that she didn't get what he was saying and then when he explained she said, "In a minute."
