Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The opening scene of this episode showed Miss Ellie and Sue Ellen as they discussed a bit of re-decorating at South Fork. What room was to receive the updates?

Answer: A nursery for Sue Ellen's baby

Miss Ellie appeared to be thrilled to assist Sue Ellen with the plans for a new nursery - one befitting the latest Ewing heir, of course. Sue Ellen seemed to be more than just a bit devious as she made comparisons of her baby with those Miss Ellie made of J.R. We the viewing audience were led to believe that Sue Ellen knows more about the baby's (possible) inherited characteristics than she is willing to share with Miss Ellie.
2. A man named Garrison and a woman named Cathy were shown in a hotel room. There they received a delivery that per their discussion was to go to Ellie Ewing. What was the gift?

Answer: A painting

Garrison was initially excited to receive the painting. His elation turned to ire very quickly when he explained that the artwork looked nothing like the photo he had given the artist to do the work. At this point in the story, we did not know who Cathy and Garrison were and we did not know the significance of the painting.
3. Ray (Krebbs) was setting the prospect of a sub-plot within this episode when he visited Jock (Ewing) in what was a quiet, early morning scene on the Southfork patio. What did Ray tell Jock that caused concern for both of them?

Answer: A ranch hand had seen a truck near Section 40 of Southfork

In previous episodes, we the viewing audience had learned that Section 40 of Southfork was (apparently) rich in underground oil but Miss Ellie's father had been very emphatic that there would NEVER be oil drilled on Southfork land. This is also the section Bobby had wanted to use for commercial development.

This is also same section that J.R. is using to entice some of his acquaintances into doing his bidding with the promise of oil in the future from that section. In others, for many reasons concerning to the Ewings - but each for have different intentions for it.
4. Jock was concerned about the possibility of a breach around the land and the capped - and, thus unavailable - oil well on Section 40. He (Jock) mentioned to J.R. and Bobby that he and Ray had found evidence that crude oil had been pumped near the inactive oil well. Did J.R. agree to check on it for Jock and report to him of any news?

Answer: Yes

Of course, J.R. jumped at the chance to take the lead on investigating what was happening at Section 40. He certainly did not want anyone else to learn that it had been caused by the crew he had hired to prove to Willie Joe and Jeb (his acquaintances) that there was a bountiful supply of oil right there on Southfork. J.R. was very quick to suggest to Jock and Bobby that what Jock and Ray had seen was "just pain ol' vandalism" but assured them both that he would "check on it" - yeah, right.
5. Soon after the Ewings gathered in the family den Miss Ellie opened the gift that a mysterious man and woman had left for her earlier that day. No sooner had she had unwrapped it, when there was a knock at the front door. It was Garrison. Who - in relation to the Ewing family - was Garrison?

Answer: He was Miss Ellie's brother; he had been presumed dead for many years.

Miss Ellie seemed to recognize the voice of the mystery man even before she saw him. He was her brother, Garrison. He had been gone almost forty years and had long since been declared dead. Garrison and Digger Barnes had been friends when they were younger. Garrison made it clear he had never approved of the relationship between Jock and his sister, Ellie. Garrison was delighted to meet Pam and learn of her relation to his old friend, Digger. Sue Ellen chocked on her drink when Garrison asked about Digger's grandchildren. Maybe she felt Garrison had asked the wrong Mrs. Ewing about the possibility of Digger being a grandpa.
6. Jock, J.R. and Sue Ellen were immediately suspicious of Garrison and his reason for the family reunion. Miss Ellie made a major decision that affected the entire family very soon after she learned of Garrison's rejuvenation. What did she tell Jock, J.R. and Bobby that she had decided?

Answer: She wanted to give the ranch, Southfork, to Garrison.

Miss Ellie reminded everyone that her father's will had designated Garrison as the sole heir of the ranch. It was only because Garrison could not be found that he was presumed to have died "at sea" and once Garrison was declared dead Miss Ellie had become the only Southworth heir. Jock and J.R. were adamantly opposed to her decision to give Garrison the ranch. Jock felt his position as head of the household had been usurped. J.R. (of course!) was certain it was Cathy who had convinced Garrison to come to Southfork "on the take". Bobby suggested all of them wait until they could learn from Garrison why he had chosen to re-appear after such a long time.
7. The morning after Garrison's introductory visit to Southfork found J.R. and Sue Ellen discussing Garrison's possible reasons to visit them. J.R. assured Sue Ellen with this comment: "The Ewings are on Southfork to stay; I'll take care of that" and he interrupted her spoken concerns with his own grievance. What did J.R. tell Sue Ellen?

Answer: "Meanwhile, I have a few more pressing problems to worry about."

J.R. was very concerned that Ray (and, Jock, too) might snoop around Section 40 enough to discover that he (J.R.) had been drilling oil from the very sight that his grandfather (Southworth) had designated to never be drilled for oil. Of course, J.R. went directly to Ray and reminded him to stick to concerns of the ranch. J.R. firmly told Ray that Jock had retired (and, "Mama wants him to stay that way") and that he (J.R.) would run the oil business. From all appearances this only made Ray more determined to learn more about what was happening at Section 40.
8. While still convinced that Garrison was only in Texas to re-claim Southfork for himself, J.R. had a private investigator check Garrison's financials. J.R. learned that Garrison was, in his own right, worth millions of dollars.

Answer: False

According to J.R.'s investigator, although Garrison was not impoverished what money he did have was being spent rather quickly. J.R. immediately blamed the young, attractive woman named Cathy who had accompanied Garrison to the ranch. J.R. showed no reserve or restraint when he pulled Cathy from the family gathering to "show her around the ranch" only to accuse her of a scheme that included "marrying a rich old guy to grab a nice chunk of Texas landscape". Cathy was just as quick to let J.R. know she was disgusted. Cathy and Garrison hurriedly left the ranch but not before Garrison told the family group (pointedly toward J.R. and Jock) that if the Ewings want to fight for Southfork then a fight it will be.
9. Miss Ellie was incensed that J.R. would disrespect her brother (his uncle), Garrison, by assuming he (and Cathy) were there for unsavory reasons. Immediately after Garrison and Cathy left the ranch what did Miss Ellie say to J.R.?

Answer: "J.R., you run Ewing Oil and you do that well but you do not run me"

With an amazing show of fortitude Miss Ellie lambasted J.R. with that phrase which was preceded by: "How dare you talk to my brother that way". Although, Jock had been clear that he agreed with J.R. about Garrison's reasons for his sudden reappearance, he was not about to get between Miss Ellie and J.R. at that time.

She was furious. Miss Ellie later went to Garrison's hotel room (to apologize) and it was there that she learned all of the details for his visit.
10. In the closing scenes of this episode Miss Ellie and Garrison were seen strolling around Southfork - near the stables and paddocks for some horses. Spontaneously, Garrison cupped his hands to his mouth to shout something as the scene fades. What did he shout?

Answer: "It's good to be home".

This air of tranquility opposed much of the rather tumultuous episode as the two siblings seemed to re-connect and we viewers were assured their love for each other was genuine. It would appear Miss Ellie had provided a comfortable environment for Garrison to spend the final days of his life.

She was sincerely glad he had returned - for whatever reason. As with every revelation we have learned as we have watched the Ewings it only means there are more questions to be answered.
