Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The opening credits featured the same catchy upbeat tune that so many came to know as "The Theme From Dallas" but the cast of characters was expanded to include two new characters. Both were seen on a regular basis during Season 1 but never given "starring" status. Which two?

Answer: Sue Ellen and Ray

The opening credits still featured all of the stars - in alphabetical order - from the previous season but Linda Gray (who played Sue Ellen) and Steve Kanaly (who played Ray) were added to the opening line-up. Both had been seen in each episode of the previous season. Creators have mentioned through the years that the role of Sue Ellen (J.R.'s wife) was initially intended to be "recurring" (at best - possibly written out) but Linda Gray gave some impressive performances and story lines were written to include her.
2. The episode opened with a scene of the Ewing family at home - all enjoying some restful time by the pool. While their sons, daughters-in-law and granddaughter are dressed for sunning and swimming, Miss Ellie and Jock played a board game in the shade of the adjacent patio. What game did they play?

Answer: Backgammon

Ellie and Jock were playing backgammon when Ellie chided him, "Come on, Jock, you haven't won a game since February". "March", he corrected her. His attention was more on Bobby and Pam to assure Pam did not "over-do it". Pam was still recuperating from her recent miscarriage - of what would have been Jock's grandchild.

A cheesy (and, typical J.R.) moment taken from this scene had Sue Ellen (obviously) working a cross word puzzle asked J.R., "J.R., five letters, water markers"? As J.R. stared at Pam floating on her back in the pool, he responded, "Buoys. B-U-O-Y-S".

His "hint" did not go unnoticed by Sue Ellen.
3. When the Ewing family was together conversations were often rich with innuendos and uncomfortable silences. This scene around the pool was no different. Jock let it slip that Bobby had to go on an "oil baron's junket in __________". What city in North America?

Answer: Las Vegas

Pam quickly made her retreat to inside the house once Jock made the statement that Bobby could not go with him to the cattle auction because he (Bobby) had to on an oil man's convention in Las Vegas. Bobby followed her inside to plead his case. He had made plans to take Pam with him to Vegas - as a surprise. She was very pleased to learn of the upcoming getaway.
4. Jock, J.R., Ray and Lucy were shown at the cattle auction. The day before, Miss Ellie had given a bit of history of the Southworths and their cattle - "the best in the state". In what city was this annual cattle auction? (In this episode the city is NOT mentioned by the Ewings but signage is prominent enough to give the answer).

Answer: Fort Worth

The portion of this episode about the Ewings day at the cattle auction was filmed on location - at the Fort Worth Stock Yards. The history of this livestock auction place dates back to the mid-1800s. Wikipedia has featured a photo that shows almost exactly the same scene as seen in this episode: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:0011Fort_Worth_Stockyards_Exchange_Ave_E_Texas.jpg Filming of these scenes were done (apparently) during an actual livestock auction. Charlene Tilton has told for many years that during their visit there (to film this part of the episode) she made a motion that unintentionally became a bid - she (almost) bought some cattle!
5. Lucy made an excuse - shopping - to leave J.R., Jock and Ray for a while. Actually, Lucy met Pam's nephew, Jimmy, who had been (secretly) taking her to visit her mother, Valene. What lovely blonde actress played the part of Valene in this episode?

Answer: Joan Van Ark

Joan Van Ark played the (recurring) part of Valene Clements Ewing not only on "Dallas" (1978) but on its spin-off "Knots Landing" (1979-1993). On "Knots Landing" Van Ark was one of the main characters for twelve of thirteen seasons it originally aired (US television).

As with Pamela, many of Valene's troubles would center around the tolerance and acceptance of the Ewings - or, their lack thereof.
6. While at the conference Bobby and Pam re-connected with Bobby's long lost (middle) brother Gary who is Lucy's father. In a private moment Bobby shared with Pam that Gary was always their mother's favorite. How did Bobby say Miss Ellie described Gary?

Answer: A Southworth among Ewings

Heretofore, it was mentioned (during the run of the series) that Gary was the one son who truly cared about the ranch. Bobby does specifically mention this quote, "a Southworth among Ewings" and attribute it to his mother here. We the viewing audience heard Valene gave Lucy some of the back story of the Valene-Gary relationship during this same episode when Lucy went to visit her.
7. Bobby convinced Gary to return with him and Pam to Southfork - if just for a visit. Miss Ellie was delighted to hear the news. Jock, J.R. and Sue Ellen, well, they were not exactly "delighted"; nonetheless, Miss Ellie insisted the entire family be home when Gary arrived. Where was Lucy when Gary, her dad, arrived with Bobby and Pam?

Answer: She was at the barn with Ray

Lucy had found Ray at the barn (apparently) after her horseback ride and was taunting him when the two of them heard a car coming into the drive. Lucy used binoculars to see who was arriving. She asked Ray -twice - who was with Bobby and Pam. Ray did not answer her with a name - either time - but Lucy must have guessed from her grandmother's greeting of the guest just who it must have been. Miss Ellie and Gary exchanged a long, warm hug in the driveway while Lucy watched from a distance (at the barn).
8. Bobby and Gary saw each other in the kitchen - apparently both needing a mid-night sip of milk from the refrigerator. As they reminisced Bobby asked Gary about a hobby that he (Gary) had always enjoyed and had a natural talent for it. What did Bobby mention?

Answer: Painting/Drawing

Bobby recalled Gary as having a natural talent for painting/drawing. But Gary admitted he had not had the time and/or the opportunity to pursue many hobbies. Gary changed the subject by telling Bobby that he (Bobby) and their mom had been the only two of the family who had "ever believed in him". That must have been Miss Ellie's cue - she joined them in the kitchen to continue to reminisce.
9. Very early the next morning Lucy convinced Gary to go with her to Fort Worth - for a surprise that "would be worth it". Lucy took Gary to the diner where she knew Valene would be working. Of course, the moment their eyes (after sixteen years apart) met, Valene and Gary made sure we saw a gamut of emotions. Lucy tried to convince her daddy that Valene still cared by saying, "She is so ________. That shows how much she still cares". What did Lucy mention?

Answer: Nervous

Gary's response was "I think it shows how nervous she is". Lucy told Gary the story of how she and Valene found each and encouraged him to insist that Val come back with them to Southfort. At first Val was adamant on "no way" but Lucy and Gary finally convinced her "things had changed" and (yet another!) reunion was arranged when Gary phoned Miss Ellie to tell her the news. On another note, Valene was working at a diner that had huge signs outside "HOT BISCUITS" and "CREAM GRAVY". I do not know about the Ewing clan, but that sure would be MY kind of place!
10. With the announcement that Gary's visit was no longer a visit but he had come to Texas to stay, J.R. was disappointed that he - alone- did not agree with the plan. Miss Ellie made it very clear this was a chance for her entire family to be together and nothing was going to spoil it. What did J.R. arrange for Gary - that was obviously NOT in his best interest?

Answer: To run a company destined to be a "loser"

J.R. wasted no time in getting his account to "re-work the books" so that this "loser company" would appear profitable - at least at first. J.R. explained to Sue Ellen if his family wanted him to be "his brother's keeper" that was exactly what he would be.

As the episode "faded to credits" and J.R. has set his own devious plan in motion, we the viewing audience saw the devilish smile and heard that little chuckle that we would LOVE to HATE for many years. Only J.R. could do it!
