Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After three-and-a-half minutes of recap, this episode opened with Miss Ellie and Jock on the patio as they discussed the recent family trials and tribulations. This was in what appeared to be an early morning scene. Jock set the tone by when he made which of the following comments?

Answer: You know, Miss Ellie, there's some things going on around here that I just don't understand

Jock suspected Ray was not telling the complete truth about his "accident". Jock wondered why Bobby would "let" Pamela leave Southfork if he still loved her. And, even at this (relatively) fledgling stage of the series Jock (and Miss Ellie) knew that J.R. knew more about everything than he was willing to admit.
2. With Pamela estranged Bobby refused to join the Ewing family for breakfast. Miss Ellie took Bobby coffee to his room. Who was the topic of their long and heated discussion?

Answer: Digger Barnes

It would seem that Bobby shared Pam's assessment of just exactly where her family - the Barnes family, that is - could place the blame for their failures. Bobby told his mother, Miss Ellie, he believed his daddy had destroyed Digger just as J.R. intended to destroy Pam's brother, Cliff. Miss Ellie quickly reminded Bobby that it was she who knew Digger Barnes "better than anyone in this family" and it was Digger Barnes who destroyed Digger Barnes. Miss Ellie may have won a few points about the Jock/Digger rivalry but Bobby was not to be dissuaded in his suspicions about J.R.
3. Sue Ellen attempted to taunt J.R. by reminding him that Cliff was most likely the father of her unborn child. Her sneers included Cliff had managed to sleep with both J.R.'s wife and J.R.'s mistress. In true J.R. fashion - he would not let Sue Ellen upset him - he reminded her she was "easily disposable" by comparing her to what?

Answer: An oil lease

What a disastrous relationship J.R. and Sue Ellen had. At this stage in the series both were only interested in the other for selfish reasons. Sue Ellen had been rejected by Cliff but she was not ready to lose all the perks of being Mrs. J.R. Ewing, so, she stayed at Southfork. J.R. only wanted Sue Ellen because she was the wife he was supposed to have and would, it would appear, soon be the mother of the long awaited next Ewing heir.

They found some demented pleasure in attempting to make each other miserable.
4. After an exchange of words and stone-cold stares with J.R., Bobby left Southfork to meet Pam where Cliff was incarcerated. During his conversation with Cliff, Bobby asked what he could do to help him. After a couple of answers that were more "digs" than suggestions, what did Cliff ask Bobby to do that he felt certain to free him?

Answer: "You go out and find out who really killed Julie."

Of course, J.R. vehemently denied having had anything to do with Cliff's arrest to Bobby. Of course, J.R. fed (his partners in crime) Willie Joe and Jeb the picture he wanted them to see - that Cliff killed Julie. At this point in time J.R. did not know that it was Willie Joe and Jeb who were responsible for Julie's death, he was only capitalizing on the opportunity to blame Cliff.

When Bobby visited Cliff at the local jail he truly wanted to provide support - in way that he could. Cliff only partially depended on Bobby's support.

It would appear when Cliff suggested the best way to free Cliff was to find the actual killer(s), we the viewing audience could see - by his demeanor - Bobby knew Cliff was innocent.
5. The episode moved quickly into its trial phase - Cliff Barnes was tried for the murder of Julie Grey. The handsome and well polished assistant DA was played by a man who would establish himself as a character actor and director in both television and theater. Probably best remembered as Dr. Stanley Riverside II in "Trapper John, MD" (1979-1986). Who played ADA Sloan in this episode?

Answer: Charles Siebert

Charles Siebert played the young, handsome attorney in this episode. (If ever the term "slick" could be applied, take look at him!) He was a definite contrast to Cliff's middle-aged, not-so-buff nor polished defense attorney. Siebert was a regular on television during the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

He was seen in "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" (1976-1977), "The Love Boat" (1981-1987), "Xena: Warrior Princess" (1995-2001) and the aforementioned "Trapper John, MD". For much of his career Siebert was appreciated for his talent as a director as well as an actor.
6. Several members of the Ewing family were present in the courtroom for Cliff's hearing - to evaluate the evidence against him. As the evidence seem to point to Cliff, Sue Ellen became noticeably anxious. She wanted to leave. J.R. would not let her. What was J.R.'s reason as to why Sue Ellen should stay for the hearing?

Answer: The D.A. wanted to J.R. to testify

J.R. was eager to tell his version of what happened to Julie and why Cliff was the only person who had a reason to kill her. In that the whole charade made Sue Ellen uncomfortable was only "icing on the cake".
7. During the lunch of the evidentiary hearing Cliff told Pamela and Bobby he wanted his mail (from his apartment) and a fresh shirt. When Bobby returned with those things Cliff's mail included a letter from Julie Grey. What did they (Bobby, Pam and Cliff) find in the envelope?

Answer: A pawn ticket and a key

The ever altruistic Bobby was Cliff's new best friend and aide-de-camp. But his curiosity outweighed his compassion when he retrieved the locked attaché case Julie had pawned. Was he ever surprised at what he found its contents to be! There was evidence of double-dealing, blackmailing, threats, pay-offs, forgeries - all orchestrated by Jeb Ames, Willie Joe Garr and J.R. Bobby could quickly deduce that those three had learned via wire taps on Julie's and Cliff's phones that Julie had intended to share all of these secrets with Cliff. Bobby also suspected that Willie Joe and Jeb (and, most likely J.R.) would have done anything - yes, even kill her - to prevent Julie from getting the information to Cliff.

It was Bobby's first glimpse at J.R.'s (top secret) Red File.
8. Before Bobby told anyone about what he had found at the pawn shop, he confronted J.R. What was the one thing Bobby found that upset him the most?

Answer: A (forged) copy of Jock's will

In a previous episode we had learned that J.R. provided a forged copy of Jock's will that would have given him (J.R.) the right to drill oil on Southfork property - something that had been continuously and emphatically denied by all of the other Southworths (Miss Ellie's family) and the Ewings. Bobby was livid and he let J.R. know it. Typical for J.R., he squirmed and denied but Bobby had no part of it. J.R. did give Bobby enough info to lead him directly to Jeb and Willie Joe.
9. Bobby accosted the Private Eye and forced him implicate Willie Joe and Jeb for Julie's murder. But those two (Willie Joe and Jeb) had decided to take a "business trip" to Alaska. (What a coincidence!) How did Bobby de-rail their sudden departure from Dallas?

Answer: Bobby had airport security prevent Willie Joe and Jeb from boarding their plane

Bobby made one call to the "head of security" at the airport and Willie Joe and Jeb were detained from boarding their flight long enough for Bobby to get to them. Bobby knew they were guilty and he convinced them that Julie had left only evidence that would implicate them and none of the Ewings. Bobby suggested to Willie Joe and Jeb that "as two public spirited citizens" they tell their story to the police of how Julie's death was an accident as they were chasing her.

It worked. Those two confessed.

The case against Cliff was dismissed and he was freed from jail.
10. Although the charges against him were dismissed Cliff is not likely to "forgive and forget" - at least not yet. Pamela, on the other hand, seemed ready to "make nice" with Bobby again but Bobby delayed any celebration with the claim he had a bit of work to do "at the office". Bobby confronts J.R. - again. What were Bobby's final words to J.R. in that office scene?

Answer: For the first time in my life I know exactly what you're all about.

This became a rather significant scene in the overall sentiment of the entire series. Bobby would never again allow himself to totally trust J.R. Bobby felt if J.R. could betray their own parents there was, indeed, nothing he would not do if he thought it beneficial to his "cause" at the time. Bobby still had to convince Pam to return to Southfork.

She was not to be convinced. In the final scene of the episode, Bobby reminded Pamela he was a Ewing when she married him and told her to call him when she was ready to live with him again.
