2.19 "Sue Ellen's Sister" Trivia Quiz

We had met Sue Ellen's younger sister before this episode. Since all relationships centered around the Ewing family, we would be reminded Sue Ellen's sister was also "J.R.'s sister-in-law". Other relationships had some intriguing evolution, too.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As the episode's title may lead us to believe much of this episode is about (or, involving) Sue Ellen's sister; or, in another relationship, J.R. Ewing's sister-in-law. Colleen Camp reprised her role as Sue Ellen's sister. What was the younger Miss Shepard's given name?

Answer: Kristin

We learned very early in this episode that Kristin had long resented her place in the shadow of beauty-queen, now married to a multi-millionaire, older sister, Sue Ellen. After Sue Ellen's very poignant warning to her that money does not necessarily bring with it happiness, Kristen's only retort was: "I am going to have everything you have and more, MUCH more!" It appeared Kristen was more concerned about that end result than the means of getting to it.
2. With Pamela estranged Bobby refused to join the Ewing family for breakfast. Miss Ellie took Bobby coffee to his room. Who was the topic of their long and heated discussion?

Answer: Digger Barnes

It would seem that Bobby shared Pam's assessment of just exactly where her family - the Barnes family, that is - could place the blame for their failures. Bobby told his mother, Miss Ellie, he believed his daddy had destroyed Digger just as J.R. intended to destroy Pam's brother, Cliff. Miss Ellie quickly reminded Bobby that it was she who knew Digger Barnes "better than anyone in this family" and it was Digger Barnes who destroyed Digger Barnes. Miss Ellie may have won a few points about the Jock/Digger rivalry but Bobby was not to be dissuaded in his suspicions about J.R.
3. Sue Ellen has her suspicions as to why J.R. had insisted her sister spend some time at Southfork. One other Ewing family member was also convinced J.R. had more than "brotherly love" in mind for his sister-in-law. Which family member summed it so well with the comment, "J.R. is never nice"?

Answer: Lucy

The episode showed several examples of Lucy's own resentment to Kristen's visit and the attention she received from the entire family - attention that was diverted from Lucy, that is. Although, Lucy was the one family member who made it her mission to watch for signs of J.R.'s manipulation of the situation. That situation was: Bobby's wife (Pamela) was not at Southfork and Kristen was there - ready and willing to replace Pamela.
4. After being exonerated of Julie's murder, Cliff Barnes had been reinstated to his position as Chief of the Office of Land Management. Cliff wasted no time trying to learn ways to hinder Ewing Oil profitability. One of his plans involved delaying the transfer of a land lease from its owner to Ewing Oil. Who did Cliff convince to "bank roll" his plan?

Answer: Pamela

Cliff learned the last rancher to refuse to lease his land to Ewing Oil - to be drilled for oil, that is - was a long time friend of his father's (Digger's), a man named Wally Kessel. Without telling Pamela WHY it was so important to him, Cliff convinced Pamela to pay the mortgage payment on Mr. Kessel's ranch. Thus, giving Mr. Kessel the ability to longer delay the progress of Ewing Oil which cost Ewing Oil millions of dollars. Pam truly thought she was helping an old family friend but Cliff knew the whole story and he loved it!
5. Wally Kessel was very surprised when Cliff gave him the check representing Cliff's father, Digger's payment on "future royalties" for oil drilled from the Kessel property. Mr. Kessel was even more surprised when he learned exactly where Cliff had "borrowed" the money. What word did Kessel use to describe Cliff - a very telling adjective?

Answer: Devious

Wally Kessel laughed and said to Cliff, "You sure did grow up devious". To which Cliff responded, "No, that is just a recent development". Cliff and Kessel found great humor and irony in knowing Pamela had taken "Ewing money" to pay Kessel's mortgage payment. Which gave Kessel a cushion of time to press Ewing Oil for a more lucrative deal. Kessel - and, Cliff - knew Ewing Oil needed the use of Kessel's land to begin drilling. And, both "sides" knew every day of the impasse was a very expensive delay.
6. Of course J.R. learned of Cliff's "deal" very soon. He was livid! J.R. was delighted that he could actually blame Pamela for something that had caused Ewing Oil a problem. Who volunteered to talk with Wally Kessel about the oil leases - and, in essence make things "right" for Ewing Oil?

Answer: Bobby

Bobby and Jock warned J.R. that it would do no good for him (J.R.) to approach Mr. Kessel; in fact, it would probably make things worse. Bobby agreed he would talk with Wally Kessel and Bobby was adamant to Jock and J.R. that Pamela did not know Ewing Oil was involved with the land deal when she loaned Mr. Kessel the money to pay his mortgage.
7. Whether it was due to J.R.'s encouragement or her own self-centered intentions, Sue Ellen's sister constantly ingratiated herself into Bobby's schedule. What activity did she convince Bobby to do that allowed them to spend some time together after Bobby's visit to Wally Kessel?

Answer: Tennis

Kristin pouted when Bobby told her that he had "business" and could not play tennis with her. Her sulkiness won his attention and he took her with him with the promise to "play a set if they had time". Bobby talked with Mr. Kessel and really believed Kessel would settle his dispute with Ewing Oil. Bobby and Kristin found some time to play tennis. Later that evening J.R. reiterated to Kristin that she needed to continue to encourage Bobby to see just how "special" she was.

As (TV!) fate would have it, Bobby walked into the room just as J.R. was "talking" with Kristin. What a swift exit she made!
8. Wally Kessel came to Ewing Oil and met with Bobby, Jock and J.R. to finalize his agreement that allowed Ewing Oil to drill on his property. Kessel did not get the amount of money he demanded but he did get much more than J.R. had offered him - thanks to Bobby. What were Kessel's parting words to the three Ewings?

Answer: J.R., you know something, I'd settled for less money if you hadn't tried to railroad me.

It was amusing to see J.R. squirm a bit in the presence of his father. Bobby had tailored the deal that was fair to Kessel but would allow Ewing Oil to make a profit. Of course, J.R. told Bobby that Ewing Oil had offered too much. Nonetheless, it would appear that - once again - Bobby had saved the day. Bobby's troubles were far from finished, though.
9. It was late in the day when Bobby returned to Southfork. He wanted a quite drink in the den instead he received what became an ultimatum from Sue Ellen's sister. He rejected her advances and she retreated to her bedroom. Who was waiting there for her?

Answer: Sue Ellen

Bobby and Pam had talked on the phone immediately before Kristin made her big play for him. (Pam was still staying at the hotel - estranged from her marriage and more pointedly from Bobby's family.) J.R. had gone to Kristin's room - while she was asleep - to wake her and send her to meet Bobby in the den. Lucy had met Kristin on the stairway and told her that she had seen the "love scene".

It was Sue Ellen who waited in Kristin's bedroom to tell her that her visit to Southfork had ended and that she would be joining their mother in Santa Fe the very next day.
10. Pamela realized that Cliff had used her - he admitted that he had! She was still not ready to move back to Southfork. Bobby did not hesitate to remind her that he still loved her and wanted her back with him. She faltered. What did he say to her when she said she was neither a Barnes nor a Ewing?

Answer: Decide, Pamela. Decide, soon.

It became clear to Pam that Cliff had "extorted her". It became clear to Kristin that Bobby was not ready to find a replacement for Pam. It became clear to Sue Ellen the best way to have revenge was to exaggerate one J.R.'s mishaps. With all of these conclusions we - the viewing audience - were still left with a lot of uncertainties. That is what makes a great soap opera!
