Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Following their encounter with the Romulans and their minefield, the damage to the Enterprise is extensive. With a maximum speed of Warp 2.1, how long would it take to reach Jupiter Station for repairs?

Answer: A decade

It's been four days since the incident, and while crews have been working around the clock to effect repairs, the damage is extensive enough that (Chief Engineer) Commander Tucker estimates that it would take three to four months to complete... *if* they can find tritanium alloy. And without being able to polarize the hull plating in the damaged section, they are limited to a maximum speed of Warp 2.1.

Given this information, Captain Archer does the math and realizes that it will take a decade to travel to the shipbuilding facilities of Jupiter Station to have Starfleet's resources.

Captain Jonathan Archer and Commander Charles Tucker III were played by Scott Bakula and Connor Trinneer, respectively.
2. Rather than limp back home, Captain Archer decides to rely on the kindness of strangers and authorizes a distress call to be broadcast. Which species, not already known by humans, answers the call?

Answer: Tellarites

At the far reaches of their communications range, a Tellarite freighter responds to their distress call, but they do not divert course to help. Rather, they simply send information (coordinates) to a nearby repair station.

Without having had any prior contact with the species, only Sub-Commander T'Pol is able to give any information on them, and the best she can offer is that "they're not the most agreeable species, but they're usually trustworthy."

Jolene Blalock portrayed Sub-Commander T'Pol.
3. In sickbay, Lieutenant Reed is undergoing physical therapy following his leg injury (sustained in the previous episode). When he complains about the doctor's methods, what is Phlox's unexpected response?

Answer: "It's unethical to harm a patient. I can inflict as much pain as I like."

If you don't recall the events of the previous episode "Minefield", Lt. Reed's leg was pierced and pinned by a metal rod extending from a mine attached to the Enterprise's hull.

Malcolm is keen to return to duty and is frustrated with Dr. Phlox's estimate of one to two weeks before he'll be able to do so. Phlox emphasizes a positive attitude as being the key to faster healing, and that complaining will probably extend things.

Lieutenant Malcolm Reed was played by Dominic Keating while John Billingsley was Dr. Phlox.
4. It only takes the Enterprise three days to reach the repair station coordinates provided by the aliens who responded to their distress call. Upon their arrival, which species answers their hails?

Answer: None - the station is unmanned.

Unexpectedly, the crew of the Enterprise find the repair station unmanned. There is no response to their hails until they are scanned by the station, after which the station reconfigures itself in front of their eyes. Where before the station had a liquid helium atmosphere inside with a temperature 270 degrees below zero, it now becomes ideal for humans. At the same time, the too-small 'repair bay' alters itself to accommodate the Enterprise's dimensions.

Without any further communication, Captain Archer decides to go ahead and asks Ensign Mayweather to take them in.

Anthony Montgomery acted the part of Ensign Travis Mayweather.
5. Archer, Tucker and T'Pol board the station and are shown a holographic projection detailing all of the damage on the Enterprise, right down to scratches on the hull. What is the surprising time estimate given to effect repairs?

Answer: 34.2 hours

Commander Tucker is especially shocked at the 34.2 Earth hours quoted by the repair station computer, and he tells Archer and T'Pol that it would take 'the boys at Jupiter Station' three months to do the same work.

Despite all of the mystery surrounding the station, its lack of personnel, and its high level of technology, Captain Archer decides to go ahead with the offered repairs.
6. Captain Archer is presented with three options of compensation for the repairs. Which of these is not one of them?

Answer: Spatial Torpedoes: Four

Captain Archer tries to get the automated system to answer his questions, or provide someone live to respond to him. Rather, it keeps on replying, "Your inquiry was not recognized." Finally, in consultation with Trip and T'Pol, Archer chooses the warp plasma option.

With the selection made, the computer instructs them that compensation will be due by time of completion of the repairs and that all personnel must vacate areas that are being worked on.
7. They are provided with a recreation area for the crew that has a view of the repair dock and an interesting technology never before seen by humans. What technology is this, that is common during "The Next Generation" era?

Answer: Replicators

In testing the replicator, T'Pol asks for a glass of cold water, while Trip tests it even further by asking for pan-fried catfish. When it produces something actually quite tasty, Archer is more concerned with the fact that the computer actually knew what pan-fried catfish should look and taste like. The obvious conclusion is made that the information was gleaned from the ship's database when the ship was scanned earlier.

Distrustful of the whole thing, Captain Archer expresses that he would rather have food prepared by Chef.
8. Curious about the inner workings of the station, Commander Tucker and Lieutenant Reed attempt to infiltrate to the computer core (and get in trouble for it).

Answer: True

Discussing the amazing replicator technology and how it would make their respective jobs obsolete, the two officers wonder how so much computing power could fit into the small inner dimensions of the repair station, especially when they consider the size of Enterprise's computer core in relation.

As they crawl through an access tunnel, an alarm suddenly blares and they are transported to the bridge. They soon find themselves being upbraided by Captain Archer for their poor example to the rest of the crew and are confined to their quarters.
9. Repairs are nearly complete when Ensign Mayweather is contacted in his quarters by Captain Archer, asking him to report to launch bay one. Shockingly, what happens when he arrives?

Answer: He is killed by an isolytic discharge.

Launch bay one is in one of the areas restricted to crew access due to the repairs, which Travis reminds 'the Captain' when he receives the communication. But, like a good ensign, he nevertheless follows the orders he receives. Arriving at the launch bay, he finds a damaged wall panel, sparking forebodingly, and then the scene fades.

The next scene shows Captain Archer being called by Dr. Phlox informing him that Ensign Mayweather has been killed in an apparent accident, due to an isolytic shock.
10. Dr. Phlox determines the truth behind Ensign Mayweather's apparent death, and Captain Archer mounts a rescue of the still-living helmsman from the repair station's inner recesses. When they try to leave, the station clamps on to the Enterprise, refusing to let it depart. What is Captain Archer's explosive response?

Answer: He detonates the warp plasma 'compensation', destroying the station.

Dr. Phlox determines the truth when he realizes that there should still be microorganisms within Travis' bloodstream from a recent inoculation given against Rigellian fever. The microorganisms should have thrived on the isolytic charge, rather than been killed by it, like his scans showed. Because of this, Phlox realizes that the body is just a replication, if a very sophisticated one.

Archer and T'Pol follow Reed into the same tunnel as before, letting the station transport him away while they destroy the mechanism behind him, gaining them access to the interior. They find Mayweather hooked up to the computer and being used (along with many other aliens) for his brain's computing power.

They escape, but must destroy the station behind them to get away.
