Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "A Night in Sickbay" opens with crew members undergoing decontamination after returning from an away mission. Who was not among them?

Answer: Dr. Phlox

Dr. Phlox was not a member of the away team, and he was, in fact, monitoring the decontamination process. The other three were all in the room, along with the fourth member of the away team: Captain Archer's beagle, Porthos.

Unfortunately, Dr. Phlox determines that Porthos has picked up a pathogen from the surface, and must stay in sickbay for observation.

Captain Archer was played by Scott Bakula, Sub-Commander T'Pol was portrayed by Jolene Blalock, John Billingsly acted as Dr. Phlox, and Linda Park was Ensign Sato. And, of course, Porthos was played by Breezy.
2. Which previously-encountered touchy species, that demands elaborate apologies for perceived insults, have they just visited?

Answer: Kreetassans

Kreetassans are very particular about etiquette and courtesy, according to their own definitions. In their first encounter (season 1, episode 22 "Vox Sola"), the Kreetassans were offended when Captain Archer ate food in front of them... an activity that they consider as taboo in public as we would consider mating in public.

This time, they were ejected from the planet without an explanation of what they did wrong.
3. What warp engine component is needed for the Enterprise that requires Captain Archer to continue treating with the aliens?

Answer: Plasma injector

A crucial component of a warp engine, the plasma injector propels drive plasma into the warp coils (which generated the subspace displacement field that allowed for faster-than-light travel).

Commander Tucker explains to Captain Archer that, while they have five plasma injectors, one of them is about to "give up the ghost", and that the ship needs four to run on. If anything were to happen, it would not be able to run on just three.

Commander Charles Tucker III was portrayed by Connor Trinneer.
4. It turns out that it was Captain Archer's dog Porthos that managed to get them in trouble with the aliens. What typical canine action did he do that was so offensive?

Answer: He urinated on their sacred Alvera trees.

Archer is incensed that the Kreetassans are offended by what a dog naturally does, and feels that *they* are in the wrong for not telling him to leave Porthos behind - they should have known it would be a problem, if they had bothered to read the genetic profiles that were sent ahead.

With the pathogen ravaging Porthos' system, Archer reacts by telling T'Pol that if anything ends up happening to Porthos, *he* will be the one watering the sacred Alvera trees.
5. The pathogen that Porthos brought back from the planet's surface is ravaging his immunity system, and Captain Archer decides to spend the night in Sickbay to stay close. Unfortunately, things keep on interrupting his sleep. Which of these is the *first* thing to awaken him during the night?

Answer: Dr. Phlox clipping his toenails

In turn, Archer is awakened by Dr. Phlox trimming his toenails (and other self-care activities, like scraping his tongue), then by Phlox feeding all the animals. After this second awakening, Archer decides to go and work off some nervous energy in the gym. He comes back soon, but is awakened again by the alarm blaring as Porthos goes into anaphylactic shock. Dr. Phlox takes care of it, and Archer tries to sleep again, only to be rewoken by Phlox trying to capture a bat that has escaped its confinement.

Between them, Phlox and Archer are unable to capture the bat, but when Ensign Sato walks into Sickbay, she catches it immediately.
6. While taking a break to work out in the gym, which other senior crew member challenges Archer on his priorities by asking if he cares more about the air his dog breathes than on the quality of the plasma running his ship?

Answer: Sub-Commander T'Pol

As a first officer should, T'Pol questions Archer on how he is letting his emotions rule his reason in this situation. Yes, a dog is a companion and much love is attached to that relationship, but to put that ahead of the responsibilities he has as captain and the welfare of his ship and crew is reckless.

At the same time, Ensign Sato arrives and informs the captain that the Kreetassans have been waiting for a reply to their communication from over three hours ago, and he brushes her off instead of dealing with it.
7. Dr. Phlox suggests that Captain Archer's abruptness with everyone could partly be due to sexual tension with T'Pol, as such a relationship would be inappropriate and not pursuable. Archer dismisses the idea but soon after makes two obvious 'Pillarian slips' with T'Pol, according to Phlox. What human term do we know 'Pillarian' equates with?

Answer: Freudian

Perhaps it was *because* Phlox had just spoken with him about it that Archer let out the 'Pillarian slips'. And likely also because of the dreams he had just before waking up, with he and T'Pol kissing in the decontamination chamber (without *any* clothes on).

At first, he says to her, "Sorry, I'm a little on edge. I haven't slept very much, but I'm doing the breast I... the best, I can."

Here, Phlox interjects with a "Hmmm" of significance.

Next, Archer makes another blunder (within 30 seconds) by directing T'Pol to "Send me your lips... lisp... LIST!"
8. While discussing many topics from relationships to Denobulan culture, Archer shares the story of how he came to have Porthos, one of a litter of four puppies. Since they were named after the 'Four Musketeers', which of these was NOT amongst Porthos' litter-mates?

Answer: Dantès

Archer tells Phlox the story of how the mother of an old girlfriend of his had a beagle that he loved, and even after he broke up with the daughter, the mother called him when her beagle had pups. Archer has had Porthos since he was a six-week-old puppy.
9. In order to save Porthos' life, Dr. Phlox must do a transplant of his pituitary gland. What creature from his menagerie does he 'volunteer' for the procedure?

Answer: A Calrissian chameleon

At first, Archer doesn't trust that Phlox will take the necessary care with the attempted transplant, that he doesn't understand how much of a bond there is between man and dog. This especially because Denobulans don't have pets. Phlox, in turn, leaves the choice to Archer on whether to proceed.

The surgery ends up being a success, and Dr. Phlox takes the opportunity to make a joke afterwards:

"If Porthos pulls through, will he need special diets or treatments, having a chameleon's pituitary gland?"
"You may have trouble finding him. He'll have the ability to blend into his background when frightened."
"You're kidding?"
"Yes I am. Ha ha."
10. Does Archer go through with the elaborate and convoluted apology demanded by the aliens?

Answer: Yes

Through his ordeal with Porthos and the discussions with T'Pol and Phlox on keeping things in perspective, Archer finally understands what his duty is. He undergoes the elaborate apology, which involves traditional dress and phrases in the Kreetassan language, plus the cutting of wooden discs from a tree and placing them in a specific pattern.

In fact, he does it so well, putting his best effort forward, that the Kreetassans not only provide the needed plasma injector, but two additional ones, as well.
