Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Captain Archer has decided to get to know his officers better, and has invited Lieutenant Reed for breakfast. In an effort to put his armory officer at ease, Archer mentions hearing about England making it to the World Cup. Which sport was he referencing?

Answer: Soccer

Lieutenant Reed is nervous and awkward, to the point where Captain Archer has to tell him that "This isn't a visit to the principal's office, Malcolm. At ease." Even with that assurance, Reed still can't help but bring up work-related issues (the duty roster) for the Captain's review.

Before the awkwardness can continue much further, they are interrupted when the ship's sensors find an uncharted Minshara-class planet along their path, and they are needed on the bridge.

Scott Bakula played Captain Jonathan Archer, while Dominic Keating portrayed Lieutenant Malcolm Reed.
2. As the Enterprise approaches an uncharted planet Captain Archer is talking about shore leave and getting some fresh air when an explosion suddenly rocks the ship. Who on the bridge is injured?

Answer: Ensign Sato

The extent of her injuries is unknown, but she is thrown from her seat and knocked unconscious. At first count, the explosion that breached C and D decks only injured 16 more people, with no fatalaties.

Ensign Hoshi Sato was played by Linda Park.
3. While the crew are trying to figure out what happened, an object strikes and attaches itself to the ship's hull. It turns out to be a mine (as the episode title may have given away). How did it get so close without be detected?

Answer: It was cloaked

The bridge crew are actively trying to determine what has happened, and Ensign Mayweather reports that something has struck the hull on the starboard side, upper aft quadrant. Captain Archer is the first to spot it, noting that it is too small to be a ship, and Sub-Commander T'Pol confirms that there are no lifesigns. Lieutenant Reed determines that it is armed with tricobalt explosives and volunteers to be the one to go outside to defuse it, due to his ordnance training.

Ensign Travis Mayweather was played by Anthony Montgomery, while Sub-Commander T'Pol was played by Jolene Blalock.
4. Lieutenant Reed must go 'outside' to defuse the mine, but not long after beginning the work, an alien vessel shows up. Who are they?

Answer: Romulans

The Romulans fire more than one warning shot and send a communication in a language that can't be translated by the computer. Despite her injury, Ensign Sato is called upon to assist.

Even Sub-Commander T'Pol doesn't recognize the aliens, at first. Once Ensign Sato is well enough to work on translating their communication, however, she comes up with the name 'Romulan Star Empire'.

With that name, T'Pol is able to share some knowledge, stating that the Romulans are known to be an aggressive, territorial race, but that the Vulcan High Command has not ever made direct contact with them. Captain Archer also mentions that he read about them briefly when he was stuck in the far future with Temporal Agent Daniels.

The remainder of the communication is a demand that the Enterprise withdraw from the star system immediately.
5. As the Enterprise breaks orbit, Reed continues his work on the mine. What happens to injure Reed during his work?

Answer: His leg is pierced by a magnetic spike that extends from the mine.

The mine had already proven defective, as it did not explode upon impact, not registering that it had actually struck anything. It also de-cloaked shortly after attaching itself to the hull of the Enterprise. So, what Lt. Reed didn't realize as he started working to defuse the mine was that not all of the magnetic spikes (that attach the mine to an object) had deployed. All of a sudden, another one extended from the mine, piercing his leg and attaching itself to the hull, pinning Reed in place.

Thankfully, hie EV suit had the ability to self-seal in the event of a rupture, and he did not asphyxiate in the vacuum of space.
6. Who dons an EV suit to go out and help Reed with both his injury and the work defusing the mine?

Answer: Captain Archer

Commander Tucker volunteers to go, citing his engineering expertise, but Captain Archer tells him that that is the very reason that he should *not* go, as the damaged ship needs his attentions more urgently.

That said, he does ask Trip to look for alternative solutions to freeing the ship of the mine. One such alternative is to detach the section of hull plating that the mine is attached to, but the danger with that option is that a good portion of the impulse manifold would be exposed to space. Archer asks him to prepare for that eventuality, as a last resort.
7. Ensign Mayweather successfully pilots the Enterprise out of the minefield without further incident.

Answer: True

Ensign Mayweather's piloting expertise is put on display as he successfully negotiates the ship through the minefield - with all of the erratic orbits of the mines, with the pressure of hostile aliens threatening to fire, and with two crew members (one of them the Captain!) on the hull.

Unfortunately, even extricating themselves from the minefield is not good enough for the Romulans, who continue to demand their departure, even if it means separating the section of hull plating and abandoning the two officers.
8. While giving instructions on how to defuse the bomb, Lt. Reed also mentions his family's tradition of service. With which branch of the military was it?

Answer: The Royal Navy

We learn that several generations of Lt. Reed's family has served in the Royal Navy, including his father and great grandfather. When Archer asks him why he chose to join Starfleet instead of following the family tradition, Reed explains that he suffers from aquaphobia. Or, more specifically, a fear of drowning (not a fear of water).

He also relates a story of his great uncle, also an aquaphobe, who was serving on a submarine (the HMS Clement) and chose to sacrifice himself to save his crewmates when the boat struck an undersea ice shelf.
9. Believing himself and his situation a lost cause, Lt. Reed tries to commit suicide.

Answer: True

When it turns out that there is no way to disarm the mine and with his leg still pinioned to the section of hull plating, Reed decides that only a noble sacrifice will save the captain, who is refusing to leave him. To that end, he cuts his own air hose.

But Captain Archer is having none of it, and quickly attaches his own emergency air supply to Reed's EV suit.
10. Using shuttlepod hatches as shields, the officers are able to survive the mine's time-delayed blast, just before the Romulans attack. Afterwards, the two officers discuss how long the delay actually was. What was the final answer?

Answer: 20 seconds

Before they even attempt their plan, Lt. Reed and Capt. Archer argue about how much time they will have and need to get enough distance from the mine for their makeshift shields to protect them from the force of the explosion. Afterwards, when they are scooped up by the Enterprise, they continue the discussion, with Reed saying it couldn't have been more than ten seconds, and with Archer, asserting himself in the manner that Reed thinks he lacks (at times), insists that it was 20 seconds, "I'm not gonna argue with you, Malcolm.

It was 20. That's an order."
