Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is a very long running UK series about Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby and a constantly changing series of assistants who solve murders in a rural UK county.

Answer: Midsomer Murders

"Midsomer Murders" has been on the air since 1997 and is still running as of this writing (June 2017). There have been 2 Inspector Barnabys (cousins in the show) and FIVE Detective Sergeants at last count! After all of the murders in Midsomer, I'm amazed anyone is still alive there!
2. Set in 1920s Melbourne, this series stars Essie Davis as the main character, Phyrne. With her charming police detective admirer, she solves mysteries while looking fabulous and striking a blow for early women's rights in 1920s Australia.

Answer: Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

This series has only had 34 episodes as of this quiz, but another series/season is planned. Essie Davis is probably best know for her role in "The Babadook", but she is delightful here and the costumes are amazing.
3. Starring Canadian heartthrob Yannick Bisson, this show has featured "guest" characters such as Nicola Tesla, Arthur Doyle, Harry Houdini, and Alexander Graham Bell.

Answer: Murdoch Mysteries

"Murdoch Mysteries" began set in 1890 and has progressed over the years, year for year (2008-now), into the 20th century. Along the way Murdoch has kept up to date on all the modern marvels like "finger marks," and handwriting analysis in his detective work.
4. Based on true stories, this miniseries recounts the experiences of nurses from Oceania at the battle of Gallipoli.

Answer: ANZAC Girls

The battle of Gallipoli, at the beginning of WWI, is acknowledged as one of the bloodiest ever, resulting in more than 550,000 casualties and lasting eight months. It was fought using large numbers of Australian and New Zealand troops, joined together in what was known as the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC Corps). Nurses on board the Hospital Ship Gascon received these casualties throughout the battle, serving with distinction and courage despite constant danger from shelling and a constant lack of adequate medical supplies.
5. Several of the series, such as "Partners in Crime" and "Poirot," are based on novels by what great mystery author?

Answer: Agatha Christie

Nero Wolfe and Lord Peter Wimsey are actually CHARACTERS in mystery stories by Rex Stout and Dorothy L. Sayers, respectively. Ellery Queen is BOTH the main character in a series of novels and the pseudonym of writing cousins, Daniel Nathan (better known as Frederic Dannay)and Emanuel Benjamin Lepofsky (better known as Manfred B. Lee).
6. "Lovejoy" is a fictional but fascinating look inside the world of ____________, which can sometime be surprisingly duplicitous and deceiving!

Answer: Antiques

According to an article in "The Telegraph" (23June2017): "Antique thefts are now the second most lucrative crime and stately home owners feel like sitting ducks in the sights of organised crime." There are even online courses designed to teach you about Antiques Trafficking and Art Crime!
7. Another long running series (2002-2015) begins as WWII is exploding across Europe. It features a policeman on the south coast of England who retires after the war only to join MI5.

Answer: Foyle's War

According to IMDB, fans have found the following "goofs" in the series:
The rank of Chief Superintendent, which is carried by the main character at the start of the war (1940) was not introduced until 1949.

In several episodes American flags with 50 stars are shown in the background. This flag did not become official until the addition of Hawaii in 1959.

David Tennant was in one of the very first episodes and later went on to be Doctor Who (2005-2010).
8. "Jack Taylor" stars an actor who is perhaps better known for his roles in "Game of Thrones" and "Downton Abbey." You might even know him from an Australian show called "Cleverman".

Answer: Iain Glen

If you keep thinking you have seen him elsewhere, you are probably right as the list of TV and films Glen has been in is exhaustive. He is even in ANOTHER Acorn series called "Prisoners Wives."
I spent years thinking that distinctive voice must be Aussie but Glen is a native of Edinburgh, Scotland!
9. In a short series on Acorn, this famous detective duo is played by actors better know for being Dracula (in a series of Hammer Films) and Mr. Steed to Diana Rigg's Emma Peele (in an early 60s TV hit).

Answer: Sherlock Holmes and John Watson

Christopher Lee is Holmes and Patrick McNee is Watson in this truly unusual pairing. It is wonderful to see these two terrific actors together in roles so out of form. I love Holmes and have been very entertained by all the new takes on his stories that are springing up.
10. "The Broker's Man" investigates fraud in which industry?

Answer: Insurance

As long as there has been insurance there has been fraud. Some of the more unusual (and questionable):
$40,000 in earthquake damage to 2 paintings.
Damage to a laptop after the baby being held up to view on SKYPE vomited all over it.
A dog tried to jump into the screen after seeing another dog on TV.
A child tried to dry his grandfather's laptop with a hairdryer after spilling coke on it, melting all the keys.
