On May 21st, 1999 the 26th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards were aired on CBS and there was not a dry eye in the audience when Susan Lucci's name was announced as the winner for Outstanding Lead Actress. Shemar Moore of "The Young and the Restless" ripped open the envelope and yelled, "The streak is over!" and two words that many never believed (even Lucci herself) would be read were: Susan Lucci. Lucci went to the stage and the crowd applauded her for a couple of minutes.

She started her speech by thanking everyone in the room since she felt it was a room full of such talented and hardworking people.

She went on to thank God for her many blessings, her parents, her college drama teachers, and then thanked "All My Children" creator, Agnes Nixon. Lucci credited Nixon with changing the face of the medium and how she was grateful to be in her hands.

She thanked Nixon for creating the role of Erica Kane and for allowing her to be part of her writing full of humanity, passion, and vision. Right after Lucci said this, she stated she had many people to thank but they were telling her to wrap it up, to which the audience groaned and encouraged Lucci to continue. Lucci thanked "All My Children" casting director, Joan D'Incecco, for recognizing her as more than just an ethnic type and casting her as Erica.

She thanked the cast and crew of "All My Children" and then her children, her husband, and the "All My Children" fans.

Despite "All My Children" having three of five nominees in the Outstanding Lead Actress field at the 2001 Daytime Emmys, none of the actresses won. The actress who did win was Martha Byrne for "As the World Turns." The other acting nominee was Susan Flannery of "The Bold and the Beautiful." What was unique with this category was all the nominees were previous winners. For both of these years, executive producer Felicia Minei Behr gave the acceptance speech. "All My Children" won the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy for the third time in 1998 and Francesca James, the executive producer in 1997, accepted. "All My Children" won the Emmy with tapes submitted over Kevin Sheffield confronting his homosexuality and the plane crash that nearly took Maria's life.
