Answer: The existence of Mrs Puff was why Nickelodeon accepted the whole show

Nickelodeon originally shot down the concept of the show itself, demanding that Hillenburg make SpongeBob into a school-aged child who went to school in order to allow the show on their channel. Hillenburg was actually going to walk away from Nickelodeon as a whole, but later used Mrs Puff as a measure of compromise. Hillenurg's compromise was that SpongeBob would be an adult who went to school. Without Mrs Puff, this option would not have been on the table.
