Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Blackbeard's real name?

Answer: Edward Teach

Charles Vain is the only other famous pirate named on the show. Bartholomew Roberts and Henry Morgan were also pirates of note, but they didn't make an appearance on this program.
2. How many pounds of gold dust was on the French slave-ship La Concorde?

Answer: 20

Apparently, this was a sizable sum in the early 1700's. As told by the narrator, it was enough to set a man up for the rest of his life.
3. What was the real wealth in the colonies?

Answer: slaves

All of these were items of varying importance to the colonies. Unfortunately, the sugar, dye and tobacco were worth less than the people who harvested and processed them.
4. Why did Blackbeard decide to attack the Great Allen?

Answer: It was from Boston

It was a ship from Boston that had come upon Captain Bellamy's shipwrecked crew and instead of helping them, hung six of them. Blackbeard admired Capt. Bellamy and decided it was time for revenge.
5. When Blackbeard took La Concorde, he killed the captain and most of the crew.

Answer: false

Some of the crew decided to join Blackbeard. He gave the captain and the remaining crew his sloop Revenge. Some accounts say that Concorde was taken by Captain Hornigold and given to Blackbeard when Hornigold retired.
6. What was Frenchie's secret?

Answer: She was a girl

There were some women pirates. Calico Jack Rackham had two women on his ship. Being a pirate must have been a better option than some women had at the time. Children also went to sea at young ages.
7. Blackbeard only took around 15 ships in his career.

Answer: false

The rough count of vessels taken by Blackbeard and his crew is over 40.
8. Where was Blackbeard killed?

Answer: North Carolina

He was killed in battle with the British Navy in Ocracoke Inlet, NC, on November 22, 1718. He was decapitated and his head was hung from the bowsprit of the Adventure. His body is said to have swum around Adventure between two and eight times before it sank.
9. Who narrarates this story?

Answer: Mr. Hands

Israel Hands served as ships master for both Charles Vain and Blackbeard. Mr. Howard was the quartermaster, Mr. Morton was Chief Gunner and Mr. Gibbens's title isn't revealed except that he's good with a blade and he's a "man of narrow interests."
10. What did Blackbeard want most?

Answer: To be remembered

Not a bad ambition. He's one of few people to actually get what they want. The difficulty is in separating the man from the myth.
