The Master sired Darla. Darla sired Angel. Angel sired Drusilla. Drusilla then sired Spike. In "School Hard", season two, Spike made his debut and claimed that Angelus was his sire. Spike and Dru became fan favorites very quickly, and Joss decided to keep them around. Upon doing so, he and the writing team enriched Spike's history to make Dru his sire, thus explaining his desperation for her love.
Spike's obsession with killing Buffy ultimately transformed him into the kinder, gentler, Spike. So, in a way, Buffy sired a new Spike, and he became obsessive for her love as well.
