Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Detour task of the race was in Leg 1 in Ireland.

Answer: False

Teams never had a Detour task until heading to Amsterdam, The Netherlands in Leg 2. Upon arriving in this city, teams found the Detour task, 'Hoist It' or 'Hunt It', at Melkmeisjesbrug Bridge on one of the many canals of the region. Teams choosing 'Hoist It' started adjacent to the clue box and hoisted five pieces of furniture into a nearby canal-side house using a rope and pulley system. Teams with strength and the ability to tie proper knots pulled through quickly.

In 'Hunt It', teams needed to go to a bike parking lot to search through over a thousand bikes for two matching a pattern in their clue.

They then needed to bike five miles to their next clue. Lorena and Jason, Kynt and Vyxsin, Shana and Jennifer, Nathan and Jennifer, and TK and Rachel chose 'Hoist It' while the other teams chose 'Hunt It'.

After the Detour, teams headed to their next clue box in the village of Ransdorp.
2. In Leg 3, teams went to Burkina Faso. Teams who chose to 'Learn It' for the Detour had to learn which local language?

Answer: More

Visiting the village of Bingo, teams made their way to a local school to complete the Detour task, a choice between 'Teach It' and 'Learn It'. In both, teams paired up with local students to either teach ten English words (for 'Teach It') or learn ten words from the local More language (for 'Learn It'). TK and Rachel, Nicolas and Donald, Ronald and Christina, and Shana and Jennifer decided to 'Teach It' while the other five teams chose to 'Learn It'.

After completion of the Detour, teams had to run down a marked path to the next Pit Stop.
3. Which team used the U-Turn in Leg 4 (in Burkina Faso) forcing one team to go back and complete BOTH Detour tasks?

Answer: Shana and Jennifer

In Leg 4, teams needed to pick either 'Shake Your Pan' or 'Shake Your Booty' upon arriving at the clue box in the town of Bouda-Pelegtanga. In 'Shake your Pan', teams needed to go to a nearby mining pit to dig for gold using tools common in the local trade. Once they mined a total of one ounce, they could trade the gold for their next clue. Only Nicolas and Donald and TK and Rachel chose to complete this task.

In 'Shake Your Booty', teams needed to learn and perform a traditional dance for a panel of judges recreating the moves and adding in their own creative flair. If the judges approved they'd receive their clue, but if not the team would need to take a ten minute penalty.

After the Detour, the race's first U-Turn (the first in the show's history) was used by Shana and Jennifer to make Lorena and Jason complete the 'Shake Your Pan' task after they had already finished 'Shake Your Booty'.

This caused their elimination as they could not make up the time lost.
4. In Leg 5 in Lithuania, how many teams completed the 'Step Up' Detour task involving stilts?

Answer: Three

In Leg 5, teams completed tasks in and around Vilnius, Lithuania. For the Detour task, teams needed to go to an outdoor museum in the town of Rumsiskes and choose either 'Step Up' or 'Count Down'. In 'Step Up', teams needed to hop onto a pair of stilts and walk along a path with them to a finish line to receive their clue. TK and Rachel, Ronald and Christina, and Nathan and Jennifer finished this one.

In 'Count Down', teams needed to count the pickets of a fence along the stilt course in the same village. Kynt and Vyxsin, Azaria and Hendekea, Nicolas and Donald, and Shana and Jennifer completed this. Once team members gave the correct total, 717, they would receive their next clue leading them to the Pit Stop at the nearby Aukstaitija Windmill.
5. In Leg 6, teams flew to Croatia. Which team completed 'Short and Long'?

Answer: TK and Rachel

In Leg 6, teams found the Detour task in Fort Bokar in Dubrovnik. Here, they could choose either 'Short and Long' or 'Long and Short'. In the former of these tasks, completed by TK and Rachel and Kynt and Vyxsin, teams needed to rappel down a nearby fort wall, then reclimb it using a rope ladder.

Then, they needed to run on foot to the next clue box in a plaza in the Old Quarter. In 'Long and Short', completed by the other four teams, both members needed to zipline into the Adriatic Sea, then reach a rowboat which could be used to paddle around the Fort to a marked dock located adjacent to the Old Quarter plaza containing the next clue box.

After this task, teams headed to the Pit Stop at the Stone Cross.
6. In Leg 7 in Italy, only one team chose to complete the 'Invention' task. Which team was it?

Answer: TK and Rachel

Arriving at the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci in the Tuscan town of Vinci, teams found a Detour task allowing for a choice between 'Invention' and 'Tradition'. In 'Invention', completed only by TK and Rachel, teams needed to go to a nearby courtyard and use several pieces to construct a crane derived from Da Vinci's works. Once they lifted a large stone using all the pieces at their disposal, they would need to place a mirror underneath the stone to read their next destination off the bottom. Nathan and Jennifer, Kynt and Vyxsin, and Ronald and Christina completed 'Tradition' instead in which they needed to head two miles into town to learn and perform a flag routine.

After this task, teams headed to the Pit Stop, the Biboli Gardens in Florence. Nicolas and Donald did not completed the Detour as they had won the Fast Forward clue.
7. In Leg 8, some teams chose to complete the 'Thread 'Em' task in India. What did they thread?

Answer: Flowers onto a garland

Arriving at Chauhan Alteration Tailors in Mumbai, India, teams found their Detour. Here, Ronald and Christina and Nicolas and Donald completed 'Paste 'Em', which required that they go to an underpass and paste a six-panel advertisement for a Bollywood film on the tunnel wall to the approved specifications of their judge. TK and Rachel, Kynt and Vyxsin, and Nathan and Jennifer completed 'Thread 'Em' in which they needed to go to a marked flower stall and weave flowers onto a length of garland. This needed to be delivered to a groom nearby for them to get their clue.

After this task, teams headed to Kabutar Khana where a U-Turn awaited. While Kynt and Vyxsin used this on Nicolas and Donald, said team had already passed through, so the device was ineffective.
8. In Leg 9, teams flew to Osaka, Japan. Which team did not complete the same Detour task as the others?

Answer: Nicolas and Donald

In Osaka, Japan, teams made their way to Kita-Mido Temple in the city to find their Detour task which required that they use either 'Sense of Touch' or 'Sense of Smell'. In 'Sense of Touch', teams traveled on foot to a nearby robotics facility to play a game of soccer using nothing more than robots and cell phones. Once both team members scored a goal, they would be able to receive their clue.

In 'Sense of Smell', teams traveled to a nearby flower shop and, using only their nose, sniffed out one of only a few real flowers in a large number of fake ones. Only Nicolas and Donald completed 'Sense of Touch'.

After the Detour, teams headed to the Pit Stop at Tempozan Park.
9. In the 'Earth' Detour task of Leg 10 (in Taiwan) teams needed to dig for their clue in the soil.

Answer: False

In Leg 10, teams made their way to Gong Guan Night Market to find their Detour clue, a choice between 'Fire' and 'Earth'. In 'Fire', teams needed to go to Zhongzheng Park to write messages of good fortune on paper lanterns, then let them float into the sky. Once twenty had ascended they would receive their next clue. None of the teams did this- they all did 'Earth' instead in which both team members needed to go to Youth Park and walk across a pathway of jagged rocks 220-yards in length, then walk back on the same path to receive their clue.

After this task, teams took a taxi to the next Pit Stop: Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.
10. In Leg 11, during the final Detour task, teams were in what U.S. state?

Answer: Alaska

In the final leg of the race, the remaining three teams flew to their final destination city: Anchorage, Alaska. At the Ship Creek Boat Launch, teams chose from either 'Cut the Cod' or 'Grab the Crab'. Nicolas and Donald and Ronald and Christina chose 'Cut the Cod' in which teams needed to cut into dead cod fish using an angler knife received earlier and receive a small canister found inside containing their next clue. TK and Rachel chose to finish 'Grab the Crab' in which they searched through a tank of one hundred crabs for only one with a ribbon tied around a leg.

After this, teams took a ride to Twenty-Mile River to continue on.
