Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why did Tom not like Dr. Hammer?

Answer: Dr. Hammer caused Tom's high school girlfriend to break up with him

Back when he was in high school, Tom was dating a girl. They made a bet that if Tom's team won, the girl would kiss him. Well, Dr. Hammer was on the opposing team and blocked a kick, causing Tom's team to lose. And the girlfriend not only didn't kiss Tom, but broke up with him as well.

Dr. Hammer was also very arrogant - he thought that the 'Sacramento' version of touch football was too loose.
2. Where was Elizabeth's pen pal from?

Answer: Colombia

Maria, Elizabeth's pen pal, lived in Colombia. During this episode, there was an earthquake in Colombia. Elizabeth ended up on the phone at 3AM trying to call Colombia to see if Maria was ok. Tom was initially upset that she was calling Colombia, but Elizabeth had explained that the rates were cheaper at the 3AM and that she was only trying to make sure Maria was all right.
3. Who goes to the dentist in this episode?

Answer: Tom

Tom had already canceled appointments twice before, so he's forced to go to the dentist. However, his normal dentist retired and turned the practice over to someone new in town... who turned out to be Dr. Hammer!

Dr. Hammer kept talking about how well he played football. Tom relayed that he, too had played football in college - and was also on the first string. But Dr. Hammer made fun of the type of football lines Tom's college had run, claiming he thought such lines were obsolete.
4. What would Tom win if the Bradfords won the football game?

Answer: free dental care for a year

Dr. Hammer would give the Bradford family free dental care if the Bradfords won. If Dr. Hammer's team won, Tom would publicly acknowledge the defeat, to whom, and the final score in his column.
5. Who do we find out had previously dyed their hair purple?

Answer: Mary

When Mary tried to get the kids to agree to the game, she mentions that she had previously dyed her hair purple for a week when she joined a sorority. She also mentions that Elizabeth had written a letter to Donny Osmond.
6. Was Dr. Hammer's son surprised that he would be playing girls?

Answer: yes

Joanie, Mary, Susan and Nancy were running in the park when they ran into Dr. Hammer's son. (Well, Susan was jump roping and running at the same time...) The Bradford girls claim they ran 3 miles each day and they were getting ready to beat the Hammers in football.

Dr. Hammer's son is surprised that he would be playing girls. He thought they would all end up falling on their butts.

In the first scene, Dr. Hammer and his son were riding their bikes. Apparently they planned to ride 20 miles then play a game of touch football.
7. Who didn't get to play in the Hammer v Bradford game?

Answer: Nicholas

Nicholas was too young - Tom didn't want Nicholas to get hurt playing the rough game Dr. Hammer and his team played. Dr. Maxwell refereed the game.
8. How many points did the Bradfords score against the Hammers?

Answer: 0

The Bradfords were scoreless in the game. The Hammers won 72-0.
9. Who dropped the ball, and thus led to the Bradfords ultimate defeat?

Answer: Tommy

Mary caught the ball, giving the Bradfords possession. Tom had David throw the ball out to Tommy. Tommy, who didn't have an opposing player within 10 yards according to Tom, ended up dropping the pass, giving the Hammers possession and the win.
10. How did Tom apologize to his family?

Answer: Wrote his column

Tom ended up yelling at Tommy after Tommy dropped the pass. When the family returned home, Tom shut himself up in his office. When Tom went upstairs to bed, Mary went into his office and found his completed column. In his column, Tom acknowledged the defeat (as per his agreement with Dr. Hammer), but claimed the actual defeat was that he had lost sight of the fact that the game really didn't mean anything and wasn't a life or death contest.

Mary read the completed column to the kids so they knew their father was apologizing.
