Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did the vice president end up planning to visit the Bradfords?

Answer: Nicholas wrote a letter

Nicholas's class was instructed to write a letter to someone in the government to get an answer back as a class project. Nicholas decided to write to the vice president and asked if he could come to the Bradford house for Thanksgiving. (Nicholas said he thought that had a good chance of getting an answer.) Nicholas got a registered letter in response indicating the vice president would join the family for Thanksgiving. (The vice president would be in town for a conference.)
2. What part of her body did Elizabeth dislike?

Answer: nose

Elizabeth's boyfriend broke two dates in a row with her. Somehow, Elizabeth came to the conclusion that he broke the dates because her nose was ugly so she began trying to think of ways to get a nose job. Everyone told her they liked her nose, but she wouldn't believe them.
3. What was Tommy trying to earn money for?

Answer: car

Tommy was trying to buy a used car. He had $50 to put down on the car and promised he would have the money the following Friday for the balance due on the car. He eventually sold photographs with the vice president to earn the rest of the money. When Tommy had David take him to the car lot, the man (and all the cars) were gone. David told Tommy that he was lucky he only lost his deposit.
4. What holiday was celebrated in this episode?

Answer: Thanksgiving

The vice president was going to come to celebrate the most American of holidays with a typical American family. The Bradfords planned to have 14 people for dinner that day.
5. How did Elizabeth get money for the plastic surgery?

Answer: Abby's mother

Abby's mother went into the bathroom upstairs and found Joanie doing Elizabeth's makeup. Elizabeth explained that she hated her nose and wanted a new one, but a rhinoplasty was expensive. Abby's mother (Katherine) said that Elizabeth could get the money as a Christmas gift.

When Abby found out from her mother that Elizabeth was still going on about her nose, Abby told her mother that she couldn't pay for the nose job. Abby and Tom thought that something else would come along to distract her and if not, Tom and Abby would take care of it within the Bradford family. Abby told her mother that no one could tell her how to raise her children, and Abby would do the same. (Interesting note, Abby said children but we never hear anything about any siblings.)

Elizabeth does come to terms with her nose when she meets up with her boyfriend in the supermarket - he told her he only broke the dates with her because he had an allergic reaction that made his face all red. And that he loved her nose.
6. Abby's father was a Democrat.

Answer: False

Once Tom told Harry that the vice president would be coming for Thanksgiving, Harry said he needed a shot of 'medicinal bourbon'. The whole episode (well, most of it anyway) Harry is talking about what he wants to say to the vice president, and even gives the press corps a list of questions that Harry planned to ask the vice president! Harry also made some comment about how he liked "Ronnie Reagan." (I don't think there was an episode that mentioned how happy Harry was when Reagan was elected.)

Harry also asked Tom not to mention who came to Thanksgiving to anyone in Pasadena, where he lived.

Harry did ask Tom about Tom's party affiliation - Tom declined to answer.
7. What part of the turkey did the vice president favor?

Answer: drumstick

The vice president's advance man mentioned that the vice president would want a drumstick. Tom was upset at that, as it was Tom's favourite part of the bird as well.
8. What was not something Tom mentioned to be done for the vice president's visit?

Answer: brighten up his study

Tom and Abby were in the kitchen when he mentioned they should fix up the house a bit before the vice president came. What we see most of is Tom (and then David) trying to fix the garbage disposal (which the family has had trouble with since almost the beginning of the TV series). David came over to the house in his snow pants and asked if the vice president really merited a new garbage disposal. (Tom replied that David sounded like Abby's father.) David was on his way to Squaw Valley, but Tom ended up breaking the garbage disposal even further, so David ended up staying.
9. What was Abby's father trying to teach Nicholas?

Answer: golf

Before the advance man came to the house, Harry was upstairs in the hallway teaching Nicholas to golf. Nicholas ended up asking Harry if he could teach him a fun game. Harry said golf wasn't very fun, but great for business.
10. Did the vice president ultimately attend dinner with the Bradfords?

Answer: No

The family (and the press corps) got all in line, ready to greet the vice president. When the door opened, there was a man with a briefcase, which contained a letter for Nicholas. The letter was from the vice president, explaining that he had to go back to Washington to attend to his duties. Even his own advance man hadn't been told of the change in schedule!
