Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the opening scenes, we see a choir singing, in which we recognize one Mr. Morse. (He rarely mentions his first name, though we will learn it later.) We switch to the sight of a woman, who ignores the ringing of a phone. Next, a man gets flowers, only to throw them in the trash. Last, a student is warned to pay attention. Who is she?

Answer: Margaret Bell

Music is Morse's outstanding hobby in life. A singing scene with a choir is also one of the first shown on screen in the series "Inspector Morse."

Back to the episode "Girl": Margaret Bell is told to pay attention. Bell seems to be a free spirit.
2. We meet the Chief Superintendent of the station, Mr. Bright. He greets the assembled officers - including Morse, who runs in late. Bright promises that he will be watchful, but will operate with a 'tabula rasa,' or clean slate. When Bright is done speaking, he turns away. Who heckles Morse?

Answer: Peter Jakes

Peter Jakes will make fun of Morse often during the first series. Later on, Jakes' attitude softens a bit. The same happens between Morse and Chief Superintendent Bright. A standoffish attitude will turn into acceptance.
3. Morse is sent to a home where a body has been found. He meets someone on the stairs. Right away, they start to argue - after all, the other man never asked Morse who he was. Morse shows his ID. The other man says, "Oh. That's Strange." What does this mean?

Answer: It's the other man's own last name

Jim is the other man's first name. In the U.K., police officers' identification are called warrant cards.
4. The murder victim, Margaret Bell, is lying face up on the bed. Morse finds some dirty clothes from Beaufort College. What was unique about Beaufort College?

Answer: They did not admit women

The college appears purely in the story. It is fictional; its name was made up by Colin Dexter, who invented Morse and most of his literary friends. Other characters were thought up by "Endeavour's" only writer, Russell Lewis.
5. Chief Superintendent Bright asks DCI Fred Thursday why he wants to bring Morse along on the gas meter and house break-in case. What do we learn from Mr. Bright's statement?

Answer: Morse had a "failed degree" - he quit before he could graduate

Morse did serve in the military, but it was in the Signal Corps of the Army. He dropped out of St. John's College, Oxford.

"You know, of course, that means nobody knew what to do with him!" Mr. Bright says. DCI Thursday keeps his faith in Morse, and it pays off.
6. Another death occurs. The victim is a doctor. This time, what killed him?

Answer: Gunshot

As you'd expect, the scene is gruesome. Coroner Max DeBryn lifts a hand in the air, traces the way to the bullet, and uses a pair of medical pliers to pull the item from the wall.
7. DCI Thursday says to CS Bright that there is "not one person in the family with a solid alibi." (He is referring to the family of the suspect.) Bright says the victim's wallet was taken, which was true. What does Thursday say proves this is not a robbery?

Answer: Although the victim's wallet is missing, other valuables were left

Thursday names the victim's wedding ring, watch and tie pin as items that are still present. There is no mention of a will or of a foreign coin collection.
8. The arrest of Morse's break-in suspect is met with marked disapproval by his superior officers. How do we know?

Answer: Morse is walking down the hall, hears what they say, and winces

The young man may face demotion, or even dismissal from the force, if he fails on this case. A lot had depended on his success. You have to feel for him when he cringes.
9. Morse and Strange spend some time talking in a pub. When Jim comes back with the next round, Morse is gone. DCI Thursday, however, finds him. What does Morse tell him, concerning a student, Derek Clark, and his interactions with Margaret Bell?

Answer: Derek sold Margaret amphetamines

Prior to her death, Margaret had been taking digoxin, which is used to treat irregular heartbeats and heart attacks. Her regular doctor, Bill Prentice, had earlier said that if she had been taking only digoxin, she would have been fine.
10. Morse goes next to visit the home of the Cartwrights. Helen is taking care of a baby, and her father, Dr. Frank, is getting ready to take a position at Stanford University in the United States. There is only one problem. What is that?

Answer: The baby belongs to Pamela Walters

Earlier in the episode, we had hints of an affair by which Pamela conceived the child, a boy named Bobby. Helen wants to keep the baby, but Morse insists the child belongs with its mother. Indeed, Morse has called in an order which blocks Helen from trying to fly out of the country by way of any airport at all. Pamela is allowed to take custody of Bobby. The episode draws to a close.

Oh - and the way we learned Endeavour's first name was not only from the title of the show, of course, but by the fact that he uses it as the word he types to see if an old typewriter is still working. The lowercase 'e' lands different, so he knows something is wrong.
